Kia Sorento: Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system - Brake system - Driving your vehicleKia Sorento: Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system

Kia Sorento (MQ4, 2021-2026) Owner's Manual / Driving your vehicle / Brake system / Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system

The Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system works in harmony with the Electronic Stability Control and Motor-Driven Power Steering to further enhance your Kia Sorento's directional stability and precise steering response during demanding maneuvers:

WARNING

Tire and wheel size

When replacing worn tires or alloy wheels, always verify that replacements match the exact original factory dimensions and specifications. Driving with mismatched tire sizes or non-standard wheels can severely degrade the active safety benefits provided by the VSM system.

VSM operation

When the VSM system is actively functioning to correct vehicle dynamics, you might notice a subtle pulsation through the chassis or slight adjustments in steering resistance (MDPS). This normal feedback confirms the system is working.

The VSM system does not operate under the following conditions:

VSM operation OFF

If you press the console ESC OFF button to deactivate the stability control system, the VSM system automatically turns off alongside it, and the ESC OFF indicator light (Kia Sorento dashboard ESC OFF status symbol) illuminates.

To restore normal VSM operation, press the ESC OFF button again, which will extinguish the warning indicator light on your dashboard.

WARNING

VSM management

Always exercise caution and attentiveness, even when your Kia Sorento is equipped with advanced VSM technology. Electronic aids can only assist with vehicle control under specific physical thresholds. Safe driving behavior remains entirely your responsibility.

Malfunction indicator

The VSM system may occasionally deactivate independently even if you have not manually pressed the console ESC OFF button. This occurrence points to a detected diagnostic fault within the power steering or stability control architecture. If the ESC indicator light ( Kia Sorento electronic stability control warning lamp icon) or the MDPS warning light stays lit, have your vehicle inspected promptly by an authorized Kia service specialist.

Vehicle Stability Management serves strictly as a supplementary safety feature rather than a replacement for attentive driving habits. It is always your duty to monitor vehicle speed and maintain a safe following distance from traffic ahead, keeping both hands firmly on the steering wheel.

Your Kia Sorento is engineered to respond predictably to driver steering inputs even when stability systems are active, but you must always adjust your speed to match challenging weather conditions or slick road surfaces.

WARNING

For maximum protection, always wear your seat belt. No system, no matter how advanced, can compensate for all driver errors or driving conditions. Always drive responsibly.
