Kia Sorento: Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) System (If Equipped)The Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) system in your Kia Sorento is designed as a advanced safety mitigation feature to reduce the tragic risk of accidentally leaving passengers, pets, or small children unattended in the rear seats.
To ensure proper performance of the ultrasonic or radar sensors, verify that all side windows and the panoramic sunroof are completely closed whenever the system is active. Leaving a window open allows external air currents, passing insects, falling leaves, or cabin disturbances to trigger false warnings.
First-Stage Alert
When you turn off the vehicle ignition, open the driver's door after previously opening and closing a rear side door during your journey, the instrument cluster displays a pop-up warning message stating "Check rear seats" alongside an audible chime to remind you to inspect the second-row seating area before exiting.
Second-Stage Alert
Following the initial cluster notification, the second-stage alert activates if internal sensors detect movement in the rear passenger compartment after the driver door closes and all vehicle doors are locked. The system triggers the vehicle horn for roughly 25 seconds. If movement persists, the system can cycle this horn alarm up to 8 separate times.
The interior radar or ultrasonic sensors actively monitor the cabin space for interior movement for up to 24 hours after the Kia Sorento doors are locked.
To immediately cancel an active horn alert, unlock the vehicle doors using the smart key unlock button or smartphone digital key app.
The second-stage motion alarm is designed to trigger only after the initial first-stage cluster warning has been successfully generated by the vehicle.
System Configuration and Activation Settings
You can easily toggle or adjust the Rear Occupant Alert system settings through the central infotainment display touchscreen using the following navigation path:
Press the physical SETUP button on the infotainment panel control bar.
Navigate to Settings > Vehicle > Convenience > Rear Occupant Alert on the touchscreen interface to check or uncheck the function.
OPERATIONAL NOTES AND SENSOR SENSITIVITY
Ensure cabin windows remain fully sealed when activating ROA. Open windows let ambient wind, drafts, or flying bugs trigger unintended sensor alarms while the car is parked.

(A) Instrument cluster notification: Check rear seat for passengers and belongings
If you prefer to temporarily bypass the ROA second-stage alert for a single parking instance, simply press the OK button on the steering wheel while the first-stage warning appears on the cluster display.
Large boxes, luggage, or bulky items stacked on or near the rear seats can block sensor detection zones. Conversely, unstable cargo that shifts or falls while parked can accidentally trigger the motion sensor alarm.
The ceiling-mounted radar sensor may fail to function correctly if covered by dust, smudges, window tint film obstructions, or aftermarket accessories.
Sensors are highly sensitive and may occasionally pick up significant movement originating from the front driver or passenger seat areas.
Heavy exterior vibrations, such as automated car washes or low-frequency surrounding noise, might inadvertently trigger the alert while the vehicle is stationary with doors locked.
Engaging Remote Start features temporarily suspends interior movement detection routines until the vehicle is restarted manually.
WARNING: Critical Safety Safeguards for Passengers
Never rely solely on the Rear Occupant Alert system to protect rear seat passengers. Always manually check the rear seating area yourself before locking and leaving your Kia Sorento.
The interior detection sensors may fail to trigger an alert under the following conditions:
The passenger's movement is minor, subtle, or fails to continue over a required minimum timeframe.
A small child is seated directly on the vehicle seat cushion without using an elevated child restraint seat.
The rear occupant is covered or shielded by heavy obstacles, such as coats, sleeping bags, or blankets.
Surrounding ambient factors or unusual seating conditions interfere with radar wave propagation.
Adjusting second-row power seat positions moves the passenger or child restraint seat outside the primary sensor detection cone.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS TIP
If the vehicle electrical network fails completely during an emergency, electronic door locks will not operate. Teach age-appropriate children how to unlock and open doors manually from the inside so they can exit safely if needed.
