Kia Sorento (MQ4, 2021-2026) Owner's Manual / Opening and Closing / Power liftgate: (if equipped)

Power liftgate operating conditions

The optional motorized power liftgate system on the Kia Sorento is designed to operate seamlessly when the gear selector is placed in P (Park) while the engine or hybrid powertrain is running. However, for enhanced convenience when loading cargo, the power liftgate will also function regardless of gear selector position whenever the vehicle ignition is completely turned OFF. For maximum safety and to prevent accidental system activation, electronic lockouts restrict power opening functions when vehicle speed exceeds 1.8 mph (3 km/h).

Prior to activating the power opening or closing sequence, double-check that the transmission is securely engaged in P (Park) and the electronic parking brake is set.

WARNING

  • Never leave unsupervised children or pets inside your Kia Sorento. Children may accidentally engage the internal power liftgate controls, leading to severe pinch injuries, structural vehicle damage, or secondary accidents.

    2. 27 inches (70 cm)

  • Always perform a visual check around the rear perimeter of the vehicle to confirm that no bystanders, children, low overhead garage doors, or physical obstacles sit within the operational arc of the smart liftgate before engagement. Direct impact during automatic movement may cause bodily injury or cosmetic paint damage to nearby walls and vehicles.

  • Under specific environmental or physical load conditions, the motorized lifting mechanism may experience restricted force and fail to open or close predictably:

    • Heavy snow or thick ice accumulation rests on the exterior tailgate panel.

    • Aftermarket equipment or external accessories are mounted to the rear hatch (such as a weighted bicycle rack, ladder frame, or additional cargo carrier).

  • Always clear off heavy snow layers or detach excessive external cargo loads before attempting to trigger the automatic opening sequence of your Kia Sorento power liftgate.

NOTE

  • Avoid forcing the Kia Sorento rear hatch open or closed manually while electronic motors are active, as manually fighting the drive gears can damage internal electric actuators. If manual operation is required due to a discharged or disconnected vehicle battery, move the panel smoothly without applying excessive physical force.

  • To preserve battery life when the engine is turned off, avoid cycling the power liftgate more than 10 consecutive times. Repeated motorized cycles without the engine running will drain the 12V starter battery.

  • Do not leave the motorized tailgate open for extended periods with the ignition turned off, as internal trunk illumination and module standby currents will discharge the vehicle power reserves.

  • Refrain from pushing or pulling aggressively against the hatch panel during automatic movement to prevent bending the internal drive assembly.

  • Never use the lateral pneumatic support struts as handholds. Gripping, pulling, or applying weight to these side lifter arms can cause shaft deformation, structural fluid leaks, mechanical binding, and potential personal injury.

  • Do not attempt to disassemble, recalibrate, or service the motorized liftgate drive units independently. All mechanical and electronic servicing must be completed by an authorized Kia service center.

  • Avoid activating the motorized open/close feature under structural alignment stress, as body flex may cause binding in the following scenarios:

    • When the vehicle body is unevenly elevated using a jack during tire replacements or underside inspections.

    • When parked across steep inclines, uneven off-road terrain, or angled road shoulders.

  • Before entering an automated car wash, confirm the tailgate is shut completely and secure all doors using the master central door lock switch to prevent unexpected sensor triggers.

  • Do not direct high-pressure washer wands or steam nozzles straight at the exterior handle switch on the tailgate panel, as water pressure can accidentally trigger the electronic latch release.

TIP

  • If the Kia Sorento is driven at speeds equal to or exceeding 1.8 mph (3 km/h) while the hatch is unlatched, an audible chime alerts the driver 10 times. Safely pull over immediately, close the hatch firmly, and confirm that the instrument cluster warning graphic turns off.

  • In sub-freezing winter weather, ice buildup may jam the soft-touch exterior release button on the rear hatch. If the rubber switch freezes, clear away accumulated ice manually or use the dedicated power liftgate button on the smart key fob or interior dashboard panel.

  • Continuous back-to-back operation exceeding 5 cycles may trigger automatic thermal protection to safeguard the liftgate drive motor. If thermal safety limits activate, the system temporarily disables motor operation, sounding a 3-beep warning chime while keeping the hatch stationary. Allow the drive assembly to cool down for approximately 30 seconds before re-engaging automatic power functions.
