Kia Sorento: Kia Sorento Theft-Alarm System - Opening and ClosingKia Sorento Theft-Alarm System

Kia Sorento (MQ4, 2021-2026) Owner's Manual / Opening and Closing / Kia Sorento Theft-Alarm System

The anti-theft security alarm system provides robust protection against unauthorized entry into the cabin or cargo area of your Kia Sorento.

This perimeter protection operates sequentially across three distinct stages:

Overview diagram illustrating the three operational stages of the Kia Sorento anti-theft alarm system
  1. Armed stage

  2. Disarmed stage

  3. Theft-alarm stage

If forced entry is detected while armed, the security alarm horn sounds intermittently and the exterior hazard warning lights flash continuously to deter intruders.

CAUTION

  • Do not attempt to alter, rewire, or adjust the security circuit components, as improper modifications can cause theft-alarm system malfunctions. Have any servicing performed exclusively by an authorized Kia dealer technician.

  • System failures caused by improper alterations, non-OEM additions, or unauthorized adjustments to the security circuitry are not covered by your vehicle manufacturer warranty.

  • Do not attempt to alter this system or add unapproved electronic accessories to it. Electrical short-circuits could result, leaving your Kia Sorento inoperable.

Armed Stage

After parking your vehicle, follow these steps to arm the Theft-alarm system:

  1. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button to place the ignition system in the OFF position.
  2. Ensure that all side doors, the engine hood, and the rear liftgate are fully closed, latched, and secured.
  3. Lock the doors by pressing the lock button on the front exterior door handle with your Kia Sorento smart key in your possession.

After completing these steps, the hazard warning lights flash once to confirm that the security system is armed. If any door, the rear liftgate, or the hood remains open or unlatched, the alarm will not arm, the hazard lights will not blink, and the confirmation chime will not sound. You can also arm the vehicle by using the mechanical key blade in the driver's door lock; however, the hazard warning light confirmation will not flash.

  4. Alternatively, press the lock button on your smart key fob to lock all vehicle doors.

Once lock confirmation is completed, the hazard warning lights flash once to indicate that the perimeter monitoring is active.

    NOTE

The theft-alarm system can be disabled or reprogrammed by an authorized Kia dealer if custom operational requirements are needed.

If you wish to have this security function permanently deactivated, consult your authorized Kia dealer service center.

    NOTE

Do not arm the security system until all passengers have completely exited the cabin. If the alarm is engaged while occupants remain inside, opening a door from the interior will trigger the siren. Opening any door, the liftgate, or the engine hood within 30 seconds after initiating the lock sequence will disarm the system to prevent accidental alarms.

Theft-Alarm Stage

The audible alarm sounds and the hazard warning lights flash continuously for approximately 30 seconds if any of the following events occur while the system is actively armed:

Unless disarmed immediately, the vehicle horn sounds and hazard lights flash continuously for approximately 27 seconds, followed by 3 short horn chirps. To deactivate the active alarm, press the unlock button on your smart key fob or unlock the driver's door using the mechanical key blade.

Disarmed Stage

The security system successfully disarms when:

After pressing the unlock button, the hazard warning lights flash twice and an interior chime sounds to confirm that the security system has been disarmed.

If you press the unlock button on the key fob but do not open any side door or the liftgate within 30 seconds, the system will automatically re-lock the vehicle and rearm the anti-theft protection.

NOTE

  • Do not attempt to start the engine while the alarm siren is sounding. The engine starter motor is automatically disabled during an active theft-alarm event to prevent vehicle theft.

  • If your smart key fobs are lost or damaged, consult an authorized Kia dealer for security reset and replacement keys.

NOTE

Adjusting Alarm & Security Systems

  • Do not modify, alter, or adjust the security wiring or immobilizer components, as improper intervention can cause electrical malfunctions. Have all inspection work carried out by an authorized Kia dealer.

  • Failures or short-circuits caused by improper modifications or unapproved security add-ons are strictly excluded from your vehicle manufacturer warranty.

  • Do not alter this security system or install non-certified electronic accessories. Faulty wiring connections may render your Kia Sorento completely inoperable.

NOTE

Operational malfunctions caused by improper modifications, unauthorized adjustments, or aftermarket wiring work on the anti-theft alarm system are not covered by your Kia Sorento manufacturer warranty.
