Kia Sorento: If the engine overheats - What to do in an emergencyKia Sorento: If the engine overheats

Kia Sorento (MQ4, 2021-2026) Owner's Manual / What to do in an emergency / If the engine overheats

If your instrument cluster temperature gauge climbs into the red overheating zone, you experience a noticeable drop in engine power, or you hear unusual metallic pinging and knocking noises, your Kia Sorento engine is running dangerously hot.

If you encounter this stressful situation, take the following immediate corrective actions:

  1. Safely signal, pull off the active roadway, and bring your vehicle to a complete stop as soon as traffic conditions permit.
  2. Shift the transmission selector firmly into P (Park) and engage the mechanical parking brake.
  3. If the air conditioning system is currently running, turn it OFF immediately to alleviate engine load.
  4. If you notice engine coolant pooling beneath your Kia Sorento or observe thick steam venting from under the hood, shut off the engine immediately. Do not attempt to open the hood until all coolant leaks have stopped and the steam has completely dissipated.
  5. If there are no visible coolant leaks or escaping steam, leave the engine idling and verify that the electric cooling fan is actively operating.

If the cooling fan fails to run, turn off the engine immediately to prevent severe internal damage.

  6. Inspect the auxiliary water pump drive belt to verify it is present and intact.
    1. If the drive belt is still in place, check its tension to ensure it is tight and not slipping.
    2. If the belt tension and condition appear normal, inspect the radiator, coolant hoses, and underbody area for any signs of leakage. (Note: If you were recently using the air conditioning, clear water condensation draining onto the pavement is completely normal).

While the engine is running during checks, keep your hair, loose clothing, and hands safely away from all rotating mechanical parts, such as cooling fans and drive belts, to avoid severe injury.

  7. If the water pump drive belt is snapped or coolant is actively leaking, shut down the engine without delay and contact the nearest authorized Kia dealer for professional assistance.
  8. If you cannot pinpoint the root cause of the overheating, wait patiently until the engine temperature drops back down to normal operating levels. If coolant loss is evident, carefully top off the expansion reservoir with fresh coolant until the fluid reaches the halfway mark.
  9. Proceed forward with extreme caution, maintaining vigilance for any recurrence of high temperatures. If the Kia Sorento overheats a second time, pull over and call an authorized Kia dealer for immediate support.

    WARNING

    Coolant reservoir cap

Never attempt to remove the engine coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot. Scalding fluid and pressurized steam can erupt violently from the opening, causing severe burns and injuries.

    CAUTION

    • A massive loss of coolant points directly to a serious compromise within the cooling system. Have your Kia Sorento inspected by an authorized service center as soon as possible.

    • Pouring cold coolant abruptly into an overheated engine can induce thermal shock, leading to cracked engine blocks or cylinder heads. To prevent catastrophic damage, add coolant gradually and in small amounts while the engine idles.
