Kia Sorento: Forward/Side/Reverse Parking Distance Warning operation
|
Press the physical Parking Safety (
) button on your Kia Sorento center console at
any
time to manually switch ON the comprehensive Forward, Side, and Reverse Parking Distance Warning system. Press
the
same button again whenever you want to turn the function OFF.
Whenever you shift the transmission gear selector into R (Reverse), the Parking Distance Warning activates automatically, and the Parking Safety button indicator light illuminates to confirm active operation.
The advanced Forward Parking Distance Warning on your Kia Sorento engages automatically to protect your front bumper when any of the following operational conditions are met:
You shift the transmission gear selector from R (Reverse) over to D (Drive) while the Reverse Parking Distance Warning is currently active.
The transmission gear is in D (Drive) and you have manually pressed the Parking Safety (
) button so that its
indicator
light shines brightly.
Your Kia Sorento is moving forward in D (Drive) and you have previously enabled the automated feature via Setup > Vehicle > Driver Assistance > Parking Safety > Parking Distance Warning Auto On on your central infotainment display.
NOTE
The Forward Parking Distance Warning system functions exclusively when your Kia Sorento is traveling at slow speeds below 6 mph (10 km/h).
When your transmission is shifted into R (Reverse), the front sensors do not monitor distant obstacles; the system will only alert you to objects located within an immediate 24 in (60 cm) range directly outside the front bumper of your Kia Sorento.
If you choose not to enable the Parking Distance Warning Auto On preference, the forward warning system and its button indicator will automatically switch OFF once your driving speed exceeds 18 mph (30 km/h). Dropping back below 6 mph (10 km/h) later will not reactivate the system automatically unless you press the button.

The corresponding visual graphic appears on your displays and an audible tone sounds whenever the ultrasonic sensors register a person, animal, or physical obstacle within range.
When the system detects multiple objects simultaneously, the warning priority and acoustic alert focus dynamically on the hazard closest to your Kia Sorento.
When your vehicle maintains a distance greater than 24 in (60 cm) from a detected object, the instrument cluster intentionally suppresses the visual warning indicator.
The exact graphical layout and design of the warning indicators shown in your manual illustrations may vary slightly from the digital graphics displayed by your specific vehicle software version.
Your Kia Sorento Side Parking Distance Warning system monitors side clearances to protect your vehicle flanks during maneuvers when any of these conditions are fulfilled:
You shift the transmission gear selector into R (Reverse).
The transmission is placed in D (Drive) and the Parking Safety (
) button indicator light remains actively
illuminated.
You are moving forward in D (Drive) with the Parking Distance Warning Auto On preference enabled through your infotainment settings menu.
Your current vehicle speed stays strictly below 6 mph (10 km/h).
TIP
The Side Parking Distance Warning feature on your Kia Sorento operates exclusively when traveling below the low speed threshold of 6 mph (10 km/h).
Side proximity monitoring functions only when the main Forward/Reverse Parking Distance Warning system is powered ON.

When side ultrasonic sensors detect a nearby person or object, your instrument cluster and infotainment screen illuminate specific distance indicators.
An audible warning chime sounds only when an obstacle is registered within 12 in (30 cm) of the vehicle flank directly along your movement path.
If the side sensors detect an object positioned outside your direct exit path, the system displays visual indicators without triggering audio chimes.
When driving forward in D (Drive) past objects located 12 in (30 cm) or further away, side warning indicators remain hidden on the instrument cluster.
The visual shapes of indicators in reference graphics may vary slightly depending on your vehicle software version.
The Reverse Parking Distance Warning system initializes instantly whenever you shift the transmission gear selector into R (Reverse).

Corresponding visual indicators and alert tones activate whenever rear ultrasonic sensors pick up a person, animal, or object in your backing path.
When multiple rear obstacles are detected at once, the audible warning system prioritizes the hazard positioned closest to your bumper.
The visual indicator geometry displayed on your dashboard screen matches standard factory layouts for your Kia Sorento configuration.
