The Occupant Detection System (ODS) in the Kia Sorento is engineered to classify the occupant in the front passenger seat using precision weight and seating metrics. Under normal operation, the system identifies a person of average adult size as a full-sized adult. However, when a smaller adult sits in the front passenger seat, the ODS may occasionally register them as a child, depending on their physical frame, weight distribution, and seating posture.
To ensure maximum safety across all driving conditions, children should not ride in the front passenger seat of your Kia Sorento. When a older or taller child who has outgrown a standard Child Restraint System (CRS) occupies the front passenger seat, the internal sensors might classify them as an adult based on their height, body mass, or sitting position.
Never install a Child Restraint System (CRS) on the front passenger seat of the Kia Sorento. Securing a child restraint in the front seat exposes the child to severe force should the passenger airbag deploy.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF (
) indicator lamp may turn on
or
off dynamically when a child aged between 12 months and 12 years (whether seated directly or secured in a CRS)
occupies the front passenger seat. This variation represents a normal system assessment based on momentary weight
distribution and movement.
WARNING
Do not install a child restraint seat in the front passenger seat of your Kia Sorento when the seat cushion is heavily soaked with water, beverages, or any other liquid. Excessive moisture can interfere with the electronic sensor mat and lead to false readings or system short circuits.
Never attempt to modify, alter, or disassemble the ODS components or seat wiring. Modifying the system can permanently damage sensitive pressure sensors and prevent the front passenger airbag from inflating correctly during a severe crash.
NOTE
Avoid installing aftermarket car seat cushions, thick covers, or unapproved heating pads that cover the surface of the passenger seat. These items add extra thickness or thermal noise, altering how weight is transmitted to the underlying ODS sensors in your Kia Sorento.
After deep cleaning or shampooing the vehicle interior using steam or liquid detergent, allow the front passenger seat to dry thoroughly. Once fully dry, start the vehicle and verify that both the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF (
) indicator and the primary SRS airbag warning light perform their standard startup check and function properly.
All diagnostic, repair, and maintenance procedures related to the front passenger seat and the integrated Occupant Detection System must be carried out exclusively by an authorized Kia dealership technician.
If the passenger seat has been unbolted, removed, or reinstalled for interior repair, always verify the operational readiness of the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF (
) light and the main dashboard warning light with both an empty seat and an adult occupant seated normally.
When the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF (
) icon is illuminated, the front passenger airbag is completely suppressed and will not deploy in a frontal collision. Conversely, when the symbol is dark, the system is primed to inflate the passenger airbag if impact thresholds are met.
Do not modify, re-upholster, or swap out the front passenger seat structure. Attaching extra padding, seat covers, or external heaters directly impairs the sensor mat's capability to evaluate occupant mass accurately.
WARNING
Occupant Detection System
Riding in an improper or slouched position adversely impacts the Occupant Detection System accuracy in your Kia Sorento and can cause unintentional deactivation of the front passenger airbag. Drivers must ensure all passengers are fully instructed on proper seating posture as outlined in this vehicle manual.

Figure 1. Proper seating position
|
If an adult passenger is seated in the front passenger seat of your Kia Sorento but the PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF (
) light remains illuminated,
switch
the ENGINE START/STOP button to the OFF position. Instruct the passenger to adjust their posture by
sitting fully upright with the seatback locked in a vertical position, centered on the seat cushion, seat belt
securely latched, and feet flat on the floor. Restart the engine while the passenger remains still in this correct
position, allowing the ODS to recalibrate and activate the airbag.
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF (
) light continues to stay
illuminated despite correct positioning and an engine restart, have the passenger move to a rear seating position
for
safety until the system can be evaluated.
WARNING
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF (
) light
Never permit an adult passenger to remain in the front seat of your Kia Sorento when the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF (
) light stays lit, as the front airbag will fail to deploy during a collision. Promptly ask the passenger to correct their posture. Improper seating leads directly to system deactivation and increases injury risks in a crash. If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF (
) indicator remains lit after repositioning and restarting the ignition, transfer the passenger to the rear seats immediately.
NOTE
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF (
) indicator may delay lighting up immediately when someone sits down. The occupant detection logic takes several seconds to evaluate and finalize weight classification. Furthermore, if you turn the ENGINE START/STOP button to the ON position after the vehicle has been shut off for at least 3 minutes, the system conducts a comprehensive diagnostic boot sequence.
Even though your Kia Sorento is equipped with an advanced Occupant Detection System, never install a Child Restraint System (CRS) in the front passenger seat. An expanding airbag module can strike a child restraint with extreme force, resulting in severe injuries or fatal trauma.
All children aged 13 and under should travel securely in the rear seats. Children who have outgrown conventional booster seats must be secured using the vehicle's standard three-point lap and shoulder belts. Statistical crash data confirms that occupants of all ages are significantly safer when properly restrained in the rear seating rows of the Kia Sorento.
If the ODS encounters an internal fault or sensor error, the central Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbag
warning light on the instrument cluster will illuminate continuously, as the front passenger airbag circuits are
directly integrated with ODS diagnostics. When an active ODS malfunction occurs, the PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF (
) indicator light will not illuminate.
Instead, as a primary safety precaution, the front passenger airbag will be set to deploy during severe frontal
impacts even if the seat is empty.
