Kia Sorento: Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system. Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) system
The Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system works in harmony with the Electronic Stability Control and Motor-Driven Power Steering to further enhance your Kia Sorento's directional stability and precise steering response during demanding maneuvers:
When navigating through slippery rain, snow, or ice-covered road surfaces.
When the vehicle sensors detect an asymmetric change in the coefficient of friction between the left and right tires.
WARNING
Tire and wheel size
When replacing worn tires or alloy wheels, always verify that replacements match the exact original factory dimensions and specifications. Driving with mismatched tire sizes or non-standard wheels can severely degrade the active safety benefits provided by the VSM system.
VSM operation
When the VSM system is actively functioning to correct vehicle dynamics, you might notice a subtle pulsation through the chassis or slight adjustments in steering resistance (MDPS). This normal feedback confirms the system is working.
The VSM system does not operate under the following conditions:You are driving along a heavily banked road profile, such as a sharp highway transition gradient or steep incline.
You have shifted the transmission into reverse and are driving backward.
The ESC OFF indicator light (
) remains illuminated on the
instrument
cluster display.
The Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) warning indicator remains lit on the instrument cluster.
VSM operation OFF
If you press the console ESC OFF button to deactivate the stability control system, the VSM system automatically
turns off alongside it, and the ESC OFF indicator light (
) illuminates.
To restore normal VSM operation, press the ESC OFF button again, which will extinguish the warning indicator light on your dashboard.
WARNING
VSM management
Always exercise caution and attentiveness, even when your Kia Sorento is equipped with advanced VSM technology. Electronic aids can only assist with vehicle control under specific physical thresholds. Safe driving behavior remains entirely your responsibility.
Malfunction indicator
The VSM system may occasionally deactivate independently even if you have not manually pressed the console ESC OFF
button. This occurrence points to a detected diagnostic fault within the power steering or stability control
architecture. If the ESC indicator light (
) or the MDPS warning light stays lit, have
your
vehicle inspected promptly by an authorized Kia service specialist.
Vehicle Stability Management serves strictly as a supplementary safety feature rather than a replacement for attentive driving habits. It is always your duty to monitor vehicle speed and maintain a safe following distance from traffic ahead, keeping both hands firmly on the steering wheel.
Your Kia Sorento is engineered to respond predictably to driver steering inputs even when stability systems are active, but you must always adjust your speed to match challenging weather conditions or slick road surfaces.
WARNING
For maximum protection, always wear your seat belt. No system, no matter how advanced, can compensate for all driver errors or driving conditions. Always drive responsibly.
The Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) system functions as a specialized extension of vehicle dynamics control, designed specifically to stabilize your Kia Sorento and attached towed unit whenever trailer oscillations or swaying begin to develop.
Trailer swaying most frequently occurs at higher highway velocities, but can also be triggered unexpectedly by sudden crosswinds, aerodynamic buffeting from large passing trucks, or incorrect cargo weight distribution.
The following factors can cause swaying:
Excessive driving speed while towing
Severe crosswinds or sudden gusts
Improper cargo overloading or tongue weight imbalance
Abrupt steering adjustments or sudden overcorrection maneuvers
Rough, uneven road surfaces or potholes
TSA constantly monitors vehicle sensors for signs of oscillatory instability. When the system detects dangerous trailer sway, it automatically applies targeted braking forces and throttles engine output to regain full control, returning your Kia Sorento and trailer to a stable straight-line trajectory.
Vehicle break-in process
No special break-in period is needed. By following a few simple precautions for
the first 600 miles (1,000 km) you may add to the performance, economy and life
of your vehicle.
