Downhill Brake Control (DBC). DBC operation

Downhill Brake Control button and system indicator layout in a Kia Sorento

The Downhill Brake Control (DBC) feature equipped on your Kia Sorento helps you safely descend steep inclines without requiring you to constantly keep your foot pressed on the brake pedal.

The DBC system automatically modulates the hydraulic brakes to maintain a controlled vehicle speed between 2.5 mph (4 km/h) and 25 mph (40 km/h), allowing you to focus completely on precise steering as you drive down steep slopes.

Always turn OFF the DBC system when driving on normal, level roads. Leaving it active can cause inadvertent brake activation from standby mode when driving over speed bumps or executing sharp turns.

The DBC system automatically resets to the OFF state every time you cycle the ENGINE START/STOP button to the ON position.

You may hear mechanical hydraulic noise or feel slight pedal vibration when the DBC system is actively braking your vehicle. Additionally, the rear brake lights will illuminate automatically whenever DBC is engaged.

Description

Standby

Press the DBC button when your Kia Sorento is traveling at a speed below 38 mph (60 km/h). The Downhill Brake Control system turns ON in standby mode, ready to assist you on steep descents.

The system will not engage if the vehicle speed exceeds 38 mph (60 km/h) when the button is pressed.

Activated

blinking

The Downhill Brake Control system automatically transitions from standby mode into active operating mode when specific driving conditions are met:

  • The road surface inclination exceeds a predefined threshold gradient.

  • The accelerator pedal is completely released and unengaged.

  • Your Kia Sorento moves forward at a controlled speed between 2.5 mph (4 km/h) and 25 mph (40 km/h).

  • Your vehicle moves in reverse at a speed between 1.5 mph (2.5 km/h) and 5 mph (8 km/h).

When the vehicle speed remains within the 2.5 mph (4 km/h) to 25 mph (40 km/h) range during an active descent, you retain the ability to fine-tune your speed by gently pressing either the accelerator or brake pedal.

Temporarily deactivated

The Downhill Brake Control system temporarily pauses its active intervention under the following circumstances:

  • The descent gradient becomes too gentle or is no longer steep enough.

  • The accelerator pedal is pressed down during the descent.

  • Vehicle speed increases into the higher range between 25 mph (40 km/h) and 38 mph (60 km/h).

Once these temporary conditions clear and normal descent parameters resume, the Downhill Brake Control system automatically reactivates itself.

OFF

The Downhill Brake Control system powers completely OFF when any of the following actions occur:

  • You manually press the DBC console button a second time to deactivate it.

  • You press the accelerator pedal while your vehicle speed climbs above 38 mph (60 km/h).

Overheated or Malfunctioned

yellow

If the Downhill Brake Control indicator light turns solid yellow, the braking hardware may have experienced temporary overheating due to extended use or a system malfunction. If this warning light persists even after the system has fully cooled down, schedule an immediate inspection of your Kia Sorento with an authorized dealer.

NOTE

  • The Downhill Brake Control system may occasionally remain engaged on exceptionally steep inclines, even if you depress the brake or accelerator pedals.

  • The Downhill Brake Control system will not operate under specific operational states:

    • The transmission gear selector is shifted into P (Park).

    • The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is currently active and intervening.

  • If the Downhill Brake Control indicator light illuminates in yellow, the system may be overheated or experiencing an electrical fault. If the warning persists after cooling, have your vehicle checked by an authorized Kia service center without delay.

Hill-start Assist Control (HAC)

When pulling away from a complete stop on a steep incline, a vehicle naturally tends to roll backward due to gravity. To eliminate this roll-back hazard, the Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) system in your Kia Sorento automatically maintains hydraulic brake pressure for approximately two seconds after you release the brake pedal.

The HAC system smoothly releases the holding brake pressure after roughly two seconds, or the exact moment you press the accelerator pedal to drive forward.

Because the HAC system only holds the vehicle stationary for about two seconds, always be prepared to transition your foot swiftly to the accelerator pedal when starting your vehicle on a hill.

WARNING

Maintaining brake pressure on an incline

Hill-start Assist Control does not eliminate your responsibility to engage the foot brake when stopped on steep inclines. While idling stationary on a slope, ensure you maintain sufficient pedal pressure to prevent your Kia Sorento from rolling backward and risking a collision. Never remove your foot from the brake pedal until you are fully prepared to accelerate.
