Kia Sorento: Vehicle Data Collection and Event Data Recorders (EDR)

This vehicle is equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR). The main purpose of an EDR is to record data in certain crash or near crash-like situations—such as an air bag deployment or striking a road obstacle—to help understand how your Kia Sorento's safety and dynamic systems performed. The EDR is designed to record diagnostic and vehicle operational data for a brief period, typically 30 seconds or less. The onboard EDR captures vital details such as:

• How various safety, electronic, and mechanical systems in your vehicle were operating prior to impact;

• Whether or not the driver and front passenger seat belts were securely buckled or fastened;

• How far (if at all) the driver was depressing the accelerator and/or brake pedal; and,

• The exact speed at which the vehicle was traveling leading up to the event.

This diagnostic information helps engineers and investigators gain a clearer understanding of the physical circumstances under which collisions and personal injuries occur. NOTE: EDR data is recorded by your Kia Sorento only when a non-trivial crash situation takes place; no diagnostic data is recorded under normal, everyday driving conditions. Furthermore, the EDR does not capture personal identity information (e.g., driver name, gender, age, or geographical crash coordinates). However, third parties, such as law enforcement agencies, could potentially combine EDR records with official crash investigation reports to identify individuals involved.

Specialized physical equipment and direct access to either the vehicle or the EDR module are required to download and interpret EDR data. Along with the vehicle manufacturer, authorized third parties—such as law enforcement officers carrying court orders or specialized diagnostic tools—can access and read the recorded data if granted physical entry to the vehicle.
