Kia Sorento: Starting the engineWARNING
Never depress or hold down the accelerator pedal while starting your Kia Sorento. Uncontrolled engine revving can cause the vehicle to lunge forward and cause an accident.
Wait briefly after a cold start until the engine RPM stabilizes to normal idle speeds. Releasing the brake pedal while the fast-idle RPM remains elevated can cause your Kia Sorento to surge unexpectedly.
When you approach, open the vehicle doors, or press the ENGINE START/STOP button, your Kia Sorento instantly communicates with the proximity system to verify the presence of the smart key.
If the smart key is not detected inside your vehicle, the
indicator along
with
the warning message "Key is not in your Kia" will light up across the instrument cluster display and infotainment
screen. If all passenger doors are fully closed, an audible chime will sound continuously for 5 seconds to alert
you.
Both the warning indicator and the chime will automatically deactivate once your Kia Sorento begins moving. Always
make sure you carry the smart key securely with you before setting off.
WARNING
The engine will only crank and start when the valid smart key is physically present inside your Kia Sorento. Never leave children unattended or allow any person unfamiliar with vehicle controls to sit near the ENGINE START/STOP button. Pushing the ignition button while a smart key is left inside can cause unexpected engine activation or sudden vehicle movement.
CAUTION
If the engine unexpectedly stalls while your Kia Sorento is traveling at speed, do not try to slam the transmission selector into P (Park). As long as traffic flow and road safety permit, coast safely and shift into N (Neutral) while still moving, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button to attempt an emergency engine restart.
TIP
If the smart key battery is critically low or radio frequency interference prevents normal detection, you can still start your Kia Sorento by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button directly using the body of the smart key fob.
When pressing the ignition button directly with the smart key fob, ensure the key contacts the surface of the button squarely at a precise right angle.

If the brake light fuse suffers a failure and blows out, normal engine starting logic will be bypassed.
Replace the damaged fuse with a proper replacement as soon as possible. If an immediate replacement isn't available, you can emergency-start your Kia Sorento by holding the ENGINE START/STOP button in the ACC position for 10 consecutive seconds. While this allows the engine to fire up without depressing the brake pedal, always cultivate the safe habit of applying the foot brake during standard startups.
TIP
Never hold down or press the ENGINE START/STOP button continuously for longer than 10 seconds under normal operating circumstances, except when executing the emergency override procedure for a blown brake light fuse.
Do not race, rev, or aggressively accelerate your Kia Sorento immediately after a cold engine start.
Allow a freshly started engine to idle for a brief moment to ensure that clean oil pressure circulates and fully lubricates all internal high-speed bearings within the turbocharger assembly.
Following high-speed highway cruising or heavy towing that places significant thermal stress on the engine load, let your Kia Sorento idle gently for approximately 1 minute before shutting off the ignition.
This critical idle period allows oil circulation to dissipate heat and safely cool down the turbocharger housing before engine shutdown.
NOTE
Never switch off the ignition immediately after putting your Kia Sorento through rigorous driving conditions or heavy acceleration loads. Doing so can trap extreme heat in the turbocharger core, causing oil coking and severe internal component damage.
