Kia Sorento: Seat belt warning
The seat belt warning system in your Kia Sorento utilizes an integrated visual warning light on the instrument cluster and an audible alert chime to ensure all occupants are properly buckled before and during travel. The warning indicators activate under specific operating conditions based on vehicle speed and buckle status.
Driver’s seat belt warning
As a primary safety reminder for the driver, the dedicated seat belt warning light illuminates on the dashboard display for approximately 6 seconds every time you switch the ENGINE START/STOP button to the ON position, regardless of whether the driver's belt is already buckled. If the driver's seat belt remains unfastened when the ignition is switched ON, an audible warning chime will sound for about 6 seconds to prompt immediate action.
If you begin driving and accelerate to speeds between approximately 5 mph (9 km/h) and 12 mph (20 km/h) while the driver's belt stays unbuckled, the corresponding warning light illuminates on the cluster panel. This low-speed indicator automatically turns off if the vehicle speed drops back below approximately 5 mph (9 km/h).
If the vehicle is driven at speeds reaching approximately 12 mph (20 km/h) or faster without the driver's seat belt securely latched—or if the belt is unfastened while traveling at or above this threshold—the seat belt warning light blinks continuously and the warning chime sounds for approximately 100 seconds. If the belt becomes unfastened at intermediate speeds between 5 mph (9 km/h) and 12 mph (20 km/h), the illuminated warning light stays solid without sounding the chime until the vehicle speed exceeds 12 mph (20 km/h).
Front passenger’s seat belt warning
To remind the front passenger to fasten their restraint, the front passenger seat belt warning light displays on the instrument panel for approximately 6 seconds each time the ENGINE START/STOP button is turned ON, whether the passenger belt is latched or not. If the vehicle is set in motion at speeds between 5 mph (9 km/h) and 12 mph (20 km/h) without the front passenger belt fastened, the warning light turns on continuously and will extinguish if vehicle speed decreases below roughly 5 mph (9 km/h).
Should your Kia Sorento reach or exceed 12 mph (20 km/h) with an unfastened front passenger belt, or if the passenger detaches the belt at or above this speed, the visual warning light blinks incessantly while the warning chime sounds for roughly 100 seconds. If the belt is disconnected while cruising between 5 mph (9 km/h) and 12 mph (20 km/h), the warning icon lights up solid and will transition to a blinking light with an audible chime only after the vehicle exceeds 12 mph (20 km/h).
TIP
Even when the front passenger seat is completely unoccupied, the dashboard seat belt warning light will still illuminate for approximately 6 seconds following ignition turn-on as part of the initial system check.
The occupant detection sensor in the front passenger seat cushion may register heavy cargo, bags, or electronic devices placed on the seat as a passenger, causing the front passenger seat belt warning light and chime to activate while driving.

3rd row seat: (4) Left side, (5) Right side
To monitor rear seat occupants in your Kia Sorento, individual seating position icons illuminate on the rear seat belt warning display for approximately 6 seconds every time the ENGINE START/STOP button is turned ON, regardless of buckle status.
If you start driving with any occupied rear seat belt left unfastened, the corresponding position indicator light blinks for approximately 70 seconds to notify the driver.
If a rear passenger unfastens their seat belt while the vehicle is moving at speeds under 12 mph (20 km/h), the designated rear seat belt warning light blinks for roughly 70 seconds.
If a rear passenger unbuckles their belt while traveling over 12 mph (20 km/h), the warning chime sounds for approximately 35 seconds while the matching seat position warning light blinks rapidly on the display panel.
If a rear side door is opened or closed while driving below 6 mph (10 km/h), the rear seat belt warning light and audible chime will be disabled for that seating sequence, even if vehicle speed subsequently increases past 12 mph (20 km/h).
