Kia Sorento: Seat belt restraint systemTo ensure maximum physical restraint and safety protection from the seat belts, every passenger in your Kia Sorento must keep their belt fastened whenever the vehicle is in motion:
Position the diagonal shoulder belt midway over your shoulder so that it crosses comfortably across the center of your collarbone.
Never permit infants or young children to travel in the front passenger seat. Refer to the dedicated Child Restraint System (CRS) section for detailed child safety guidelines.
WARNING
Twisted Seat Belt Risk
Always inspect the belt to ensure the webbing is flat and not twisted when fastened. A twisted seat belt cannot distribute restraint forces evenly during an impact and may cause serious cuts or internal injury.
CAUTION
Shoulder Belt Usage Rules
Never run the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back. An improperly routed shoulder strap fails to restrain the upper torso in a collision.
Always wear both the shoulder strap and the lap portion of the combined lap/shoulder belt system.
WARNING
Damaged Seat Belt Hazard
Any visible damage or fraying on the webbing or metal latch hardware can lead to system failure during a severe crash, resulting in serious injury or death. Replace the complete seat belt assembly immediately if any component shows wear or structural damage.
Seat belts are designed to bear against the body's bony skeleton and should be positioned low across the front of the pelvis, chest, and shoulders. Never allow the lap portion of the belt to rest over the soft abdominal area.
Adjust seat belts as tightly as possible while maintaining comfortable posture to afford full protection. Slack in the belt webbing drastically reduces the safety restraint offered to the user in a collision.
Keep the seat belt fabric clean and free from contamination by polishes, oils, household chemicals, or battery acid. Clean the webbing using mild soap and warm water. Replace the belt assembly if the material becomes frayed, contaminated, or physically worn:
Do not alter, modify, or add accessories to the seat belt assembly, as modifications can prevent the auto-locking and tensioning devices from removing slack effectively.
When clicking the latch plate home, take care not to insert your belt tongue into a buckle designed for an adjacent seating position, as an incorrect buckle connection compromises occupant protection.
Never attempt to buckle or unbuckle your seat belt while actively driving your Kia Sorento, as doing so diverts attention from the road and increases the risk of loss of vehicle control.
Ensure the seat belt webbing does not cross over rigid, fragile, or breakable objects stored in your pockets or clothing while fastened.
WARNING
Seat Belt Buckle Obstructions
Prevent foreign objects such as food crumbs, coins, small items, or liquids from falling into the seat belt buckle slot. Foreign matter inside the latch mechanism can prevent the belt tongue from locking securely.
