Kia Sorento: Resetting the power liftgate. Emergency liftgate safety release
Electronic recalibration of the Kia Sorento motorized liftgate drive module becomes necessary under specific maintenance or power loss scenarios, including:
Recharging a completely drained 12V starter battery.
Reconnecting the battery cables after service, maintenance, or installing a replacement 12V battery.
Reinstalling or replacing the dedicated power liftgate system fuse in the vehicle junction block.
|
To initialize and reset the electronic liftgate control module on your Kia Sorento, perform the following sequence:
Allow the hatch to complete its motorized stroke until it reaches the fully open position. If the panel stops or is obstructed before reaching full extension, the initialization process fails and must be restarted from the beginning.
TIP
If the motorized hatch continues to malfunction or fails to cycle automatically after executing this recalibration sequence, visit an authorized Kia service center to have the drive assembly and sensors inspected.

If your Kia Sorento loses electrical power or encounters an emergency situation, occupants inside the luggage area can disengage the tailgate lock manually from within the interior by following these steps:
WARNING
For household and occupant safety, ensure all regular drivers and family members are fully trained on:
the physical location of the manual emergency release slot inside the Kia Sorento rear cargo space;
the mechanical operation required to unlatch and open the tailgate manually if trapped inside the vehicle.
Passengers and pets must never ride inside the luggage area under any circumstances. The rear cargo compartment lacks seat belts, structural occupant protection, or airbag coverage, making it extremely dangerous during a collision.
Reserve the interior manual safety latch strictly for genuine emergency situations. Use extreme caution if operating the mechanical release while the vehicle is in motion.
