Kia Sorento (MQ4, 2021-2026) Owner's Manual / Opening and Closing / Power liftgate: (if equipped) / Operating the power liftgate. Setting the power liftgate

Operating the power liftgate

Power liftgate open/close button (smart key, instrument panel): (if equipped)

Press and hold the dedicated power liftgate control button located on your smart key fob or to the left of the steering wheel on the driver dashboard for approximately 1 second. The liftgate initiates automatic movement accompanied by an audible chime. Tapping the button a second time while the panel is moving pauses the tailgate at its current angle.

If the smart key moves out of effective wireless signal range (approximately 30 feet or 10 meters) during powered movement, the system halts operation and sounds an alert chime for 5 seconds to notify the user.

When the Kia Sorento tailgate is shut, press the exterior release switch hidden under the rear handle trim to engage the automatic opening cycle.

If the vehicle doors are locked, ensure you have the smart key on your person within the detection zone near the rear bumper before pressing the exterior switch button.

If the vehicle doors are already unlocked, pressing the exterior handle button automatically opens or closes the rear hatch with an alert chime, even if the smart key fob is not detected nearby.

To lower and latch the open hatch from the rear cargo area, press the interior power liftgate switch located along the bottom edge of the open door panel to initiate powered closing.

Automatic reverse

If the Kia Sorento power liftgate encounters mechanical resistance or physical contact with an object during operation, the safety pinch system automatically stops movement or reverses direction to fully open the hatch. However, the auto-reverse system may not engage properly or can trigger unexpectedly under certain environmental circumstances:

WARNING

Never intentionally place hands, feet, body parts, or valuable objects in the direct path of the moving tailgate to test the auto-reverse sensor mechanism. Doing so risks severe pinch injury or structural body damage to your Kia Sorento.

TIP

If the auto-reverse safety feature trips 2 consecutive times during a single cycle, automatic operation disables temporarily. To reset the drive mechanism, guide the hatch fully open or closed manually, wait 30 seconds, and resume normal power liftgate operation.

Setting the power liftgate

You can customize the motorized tailgate opening speed and full-open height preferences directly through the infotainment touch screen settings menu on your Kia Sorento. Access the vehicle setup menu to select fast or standard opening speeds, or program customized height limits to prevent ceiling contact in low-clearance garages.

Power liftgate opening speed

To customize the motorized liftgate travel speed on your Kia Sorento, access the central touchscreen panel and navigate to Setup > Vehicle > Door > Power Liftgate Opening Speed. From this menu, you can select between Normal and Fast operational speeds to match your preference (the vehicle defaults to the Fast setting from the factory).

Power liftgate opening height

To prevent structural collisions when parking in garages with low ceilings or carrying overhead cargo, you can adjust the total opening height of the Kia Sorento motorized hatch. Navigate to Setup > Vehicle > Door > Power Liftgate Opening Height on the central infotainment display, then choose between Full Open, Level 3, Level 2, Level 1, or User Height Setting. For additional operational details, consult your primary infotainment user manual.

User height setting

  1. Manually raise or lower the open liftgate panel to your exact preferred height position.
  2. Press and hold the interior power liftgate close/lock button located along the bottom inner trim of the tailgate panel for more than 3 seconds until an confirmation chime sounds.

Once you select User Height Setting within the system menu, the Kia Sorento power liftgate will automatically open to your exact saved height profile every time it is activated.

    TIP

    • If you select User Height Setting in the menu without previously setting a custom height using the inner door panel button, the liftgate defaults to opening completely to the maximum Full Open position.

    • Switching between fixed height levels (such as Level 1 through Level 3 or Full Open) and back to User Height Setting will recall and apply your previously stored manual height position instantly.

    • Liftgate speed and maximum opening height presets are saved individually to each driver profile on your Kia Sorento. When changing the active driver profile via the infotainment system, the motorized hatch settings automatically adjust to that specific user's preference.
