Kia Sorento: PrecautionsWARNING
To reduce the chance of serious or fatal injuries and receive the maximum safety benefit from your restraint system in the Kia Sorento, observe the following critical instructions:
Never place a child in any child restraint system or booster seat in the front passenger seat of your vehicle.
An infant or child seated in the front row could be severely injured or killed by an inflating airbag module during a collision.
Children aged 13 and under must always be properly restrained in the rear seating positions. If an older child over age 13 must sit in the front passenger seat, they must be securely buckled into the 3-point seat belt, and the front passenger seat must be slid back as far as practical from the dashboard.
Whenever young children are riding in the rear outboard seats of your Kia Sorento, they must be properly secured using an age- and size-appropriate Child Restraint System.
Follow the fundamental ABC rule—Always Buckle Children in the back seat. The rear seating area remains the safest position in the vehicle for occupants of any age.
For maximum structural and restraint protection across all types of impacts, all vehicle occupants, including the driver, should always wear their seat belts regardless of whether an airbag is equipped at their seating location. Never lean forward or rest against the dashboard while the vehicle is moving.
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbag deploys with rapid, explosive force to buffer crash energy. If an occupant is sitting out of position or unbelted, the force of the deploying airbag module can inflict severe or fatal blunt-force trauma.
Front and side airbags can cause significant bodily injury to driver or passenger seat occupants who are improperly positioned or leaning out of alignment.
Adjust the driver and passenger seats as far back from the front airbag modules as reasonably possible while still allowing the driver to comfortably maintain full control over the steering wheel and pedals.
Slouching, leaning, or sitting out of position significantly increases the danger of fatal injuries during a crash. All occupants must sit upright with their backs firm against the seatback, centered on the seat cushion, seat belts fastened, with legs comfortably extended and feet placed flat on the floor until the vehicle comes to a complete stop.
To avoid serious bodily harm or death caused by rapid airbag inflation, the driver must maintain proper distance from the steering wheel hub, while the front passenger must push their seat back toward the rear bulkhead and remain seated upright.
Do not allow occupants to rest their head or body against side doors, rest their arms on interior trim, lean out open windows, or place loose items between themselves and the side door panels in seats protected by side or side-curtain airbags.
To ensure optimal shielding performance from side airbags and avoid impact injuries during deployment, both front seat occupants must remain seated upright with seat belts correctly adjusted and buckled.
No loose objects, aftermarket accessories, or decorative items (such as instrument panel covers, smartphone holders, cupholders, air freshener bottles, or vinyl stickers) should be mounted over or near airbag deployment covers on the steering wheel, instrument cluster, windshield, or passenger-side dash panel above the glove box. In a crash, these objects become hazardous projectiles.
Never place or insert any sharp objects, tools, or accessories into small gaps near side airbag labels attached to the seatbacks. Any obstruction in these areas can alter airbag expansion paths, causing severe injury or structural failure.
When installing liquid container air fresheners inside your Kia Sorento, avoid placing them on or near the instrument cluster or dashboard surfaces. Liquid containers can easily dislodge and transform into high-velocity projectiles if the passenger airbag inflates.
Do not mount any accessories or place objects across airbag deployment paths, including doors, side window glass, interior trim panels, or the front and rear roof pillars.
For occupant safety during sudden vehicle movements, do not hang heavy items, tools, or rigid clothes hangers from the interior coat hooks.
If the SRS airbag warning light on the instrument cluster stays illuminated or fails to turn off while driving your Kia Sorento, have the vehicle safety system inspected and serviced immediately by an authorized Kia dealer.
Airbag modules are single-use safety components—always have an authorized Kia dealer replace deployed airbags and related sensors immediately following a collision.
Keep all SRS electronic components, sensors, and wiring harnesses protected from water or liquid spills. Corroded or short-circuited SRS electrical components can cause system failure or spark an electrical fire.
If your vehicle has suffered water damage, flooding, or submerged carpeting, do not attempt to start the engine. Have the vehicle towed directly to an authorized Kia dealer for an electrical system evaluation. When cleaning outer airbag cover pads, use only a soft dry cloth or one lightly dampened with clean water; chemical cleaners or solvents can degrade the protective cover materials and impair proper deployment.
The violent rapid expansion of an inflating airbag module may cause minor secondary injuries, including facial or skin abrasions, thermal burns, or minor cuts from shattered windshield glass.
Following an airbag deployment, internal mechanical hardware around the steering wheel hub, dashboard panel, and roof rail structures above the doors becomes extremely hot. Avoid touching any internal airbag housing areas immediately after inflation to prevent severe burn injuries.
Front and side airbags can cause severe injury to front-seat occupants who are sitting out of position or not wearing their seat belts properly during an impact event.
In certain complex or low-speed collisions, there is a risk that front, side, or curtain airbags may fail to trigger or may deploy incorrectly if impact thresholds are not met.
To avoid accidental side airbag deployment, avoid striking the side impact sensor locations while the vehicle ignition is switched to the ON position, as well as for approximately 3 minutes after switching the vehicle to the OFF position.
Never hit, strike, or apply force to structural areas housing airbag modules or collision sensors. Physical impacts to sensor locations can trigger unintended airbag deployment, resulting in severe physical injury.
Altering the mounting position, alignment, or angle of crash sensors can result in system failure, leading to unexpected deployments or non-deployments during severe accidents. Never perform self-maintenance near airbag sensors; always rely on an authorized Kia dealer for repairs.
Do not tamper with, modify, or disconnect any SRS wiring, connectors, or structural body panels, nor apply decorative emblem badges over airbag pad covers. Unauthorized modifications can degrade system responsiveness. Always have SRS maintenance performed by an authorized Kia dealer.
When scrapping or dismantling a vehicle, specific safety procedures must be followed to remove undeployed SRS modules and seat belt pretensioners to eliminate fire and explosion hazards. An authorized Kia dealer can safely handle or provide instructions for disposing of these hazardous pyrotechnic components.
CAUTION
SRS airbag modules and seat belt pretensioners contain pyrotechnic chemical propellants. Scrapping a vehicle without properly deactivating and removing these components poses a major fire and explosion hazard. Always consult an authorized Kia dealer before sending the vehicle for recycling or scrapping.
The electronic SRS system is powered when the ignition is in the ON position and remains active for roughly 3 minutes after turning the vehicle OFF. If the SRS warning light does not illuminate during the initial bulb check, stays lit longer than 6 seconds after ignition, or illuminates while driving, the system has detected a fault and requires inspection by an authorized Kia dealer.
Front airbags are engineered to inflate only during moderate-to-severe frontal impacts. Because airbag modules inflate only once per incident, occupants must always keep their seat belts buckled for ongoing protection.
Front airbags are not designed to deploy during side-impacts, rear-end collisions, or vehicle rollovers, nor will they inflate in minor frontal crashes below the calibrated deceleration threshold.
Do not attempt to disassemble, open, or repair any components of the side curtain airbag assembly mounted along the roof rails. All servicing must be carried out by an authorized Kia dealer.
Modifying or disturbing sensor mounting angles due to front bumper damage, body repairs, or B-pillar structural work can cause system malfunction. Have any body repairs near impact sensors inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
Your Kia Sorento relies on precisely engineered crumple zones and calibrated impact sensors to control airbag deployment. Install only Kia Genuine Parts or equivalent components when replacing bumpers or adding front guard accessories to prevent altering crash energy transfer.
Turn the vehicle ignition to OFF and wait at least 3 minutes before towing the vehicle. The rollover sensors remain powered briefly after shutoff and could deploy side curtain airbags if the vehicle tilts significantly while being loaded onto a tow truck.
Only operate the front passenger airbag manual deactivation switch when the ignition is in the OFF position. Toggling the switch while the ignition is ON can generate fault codes in the SRS Control Module and prevent proper airbag activation in a crash.
Always switch the ignition OFF before replacing fuses or disconnecting battery terminals. Removing airbag system fuses while the ignition is ON will trigger an SRS error code and illuminate the instrument cluster warning light.
NOTE
Front airbags are designed to deploy only when front crash deceleration forces exceed specific structural safety thresholds.
Front airbag modules remain uninflated during low-speed impacts, side strikes, rear collisions, or rollover events where frontal cushioning provides no safety benefit.
Side and curtain airbags inflate during severe lateral collisions or vehicle rollovers to shield occupants from window glass and hard interior surfaces.
In a detected vehicle rollover, side curtain airbags inflate instantly to provide head cushioning and prevent occupant ejection from the cabin.
Rollover sensors continuously monitor vehicle tilt and angular velocity, automatically triggering side curtain airbags if instability or rolling motion is detected.
While front airbags primarily respond to frontal crash forces, severe off-angle or diagonal impacts may trigger both front and side airbag systems if sensor thresholds are reached. Similarly, side curtain airbags deploy during lateral strikes, detected rollovers, or extreme off-road chassis tilting (such as when being towed or driving on steep inclines). Even when side airbags cannot cushion lateral forces in a complex dynamic event, they remain fully inflated to prevent seatbelted passengers from being ejected through side windows. Rough road surfaces, high curbs, or deep potholes can also trigger sensor thresholds, so drive cautiously on unpaved terrain to avoid unintended airbag deployments in your Kia Sorento.
