Kia Sorento: If the engine overheats. In case of an emergency while driving
If the engine overheats
If your instrument cluster temperature gauge climbs into the red overheating zone, you experience a noticeable drop in engine power, or you hear unusual metallic pinging and knocking noises, your Kia Sorento engine is running dangerously hot.
If you encounter this stressful situation, take the following immediate corrective actions:
- Safely signal, pull off the active roadway, and bring your vehicle to a complete stop as soon as traffic conditions permit.
- Shift the transmission selector firmly into P (Park) and engage the mechanical parking brake.
- If the air conditioning system is currently running, turn it OFF immediately to alleviate engine load.
- If you notice engine coolant pooling beneath your Kia Sorento or observe thick steam venting from under the hood, shut off the engine immediately. Do not attempt to open the hood until all coolant leaks have stopped and the steam has completely dissipated.
- If there are no visible coolant leaks or escaping steam, leave the engine idling and verify that the electric cooling fan is actively operating.
If the cooling fan fails to run, turn off the engine immediately to prevent severe internal damage.
- Inspect the auxiliary water pump drive belt to verify it is present and intact.
- If the drive belt is still in place, check its tension to ensure it is tight and not slipping.
- If the belt tension and condition appear normal, inspect the radiator, coolant hoses, and underbody area for any signs of leakage. (Note: If you were recently using the air conditioning, clear water condensation draining onto the pavement is completely normal).
WARNING
Under the hood

While the engine is running during checks, keep your hair, loose clothing, and hands safely away from all rotating mechanical parts, such as cooling fans and drive belts, to avoid severe injury.
- If the water pump drive belt is snapped or coolant is actively leaking, shut down the engine without delay and contact the nearest authorized Kia dealer for professional assistance.
- If you cannot pinpoint the root cause of the overheating, wait patiently until the engine temperature drops back down to normal operating levels. If coolant loss is evident, carefully top off the expansion reservoir with fresh coolant until the fluid reaches the halfway mark.
- Proceed forward with extreme caution, maintaining vigilance for any recurrence of high temperatures. If the Kia Sorento overheats a second time, pull over and call an authorized Kia dealer for immediate support.
WARNING
Coolant reservoir cap

Never attempt to remove the engine coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot. Scalding fluid and pressurized steam can erupt violently from the opening, causing severe burns and injuries.
CAUTION
-
A massive loss of coolant points directly to a serious compromise within the cooling system. Have your Kia Sorento inspected by an authorized service center as soon as possible.
-
Pouring cold coolant abruptly into an overheated engine can induce thermal shock, leading to cracked engine blocks or cylinder heads. To prevent catastrophic damage, add coolant gradually and in small amounts while the engine idles.
In case of an emergency while driving
When unexpected emergencies arise while piloting your Kia Sorento, maintain your composure and execute these structured safety steps:
If the vehicle stalls while driving
- Gradually ease off the accelerator and let your vehicle slow down naturally while maintaining a straight trajectory.
- Steer the vehicle cautiously off the active travel lane to a secure location on the roadside.
- Activate your hazard warning lights immediately to signal other motorists.
- Attempt to restart your Kia Sorento engine. If the vehicle fails to fire up, reach out to an authorized Kia dealer for towing and repair assistance.
If the engine stalls at a crossroad or junction
If your engine cuts out unexpectedly in the middle of a busy intersection or junction, shift the transmission immediately into N (Neutral) and safely push your Kia Sorento out of traffic to a secure refuge.
If you have a flat tire while driving
- Lift your foot smoothly off the accelerator pedal and allow your Kia Sorento to decelerate naturally while keeping the steering wheel straight.
Avoid slamming on the brakes or jerking the steering wheel to pull off the road abruptly, as sudden maneuvers can cause a dangerous loss of vehicle control.
- Once the vehicle has coasted down to a manageable and safe speed, apply gentle braking pressure and guide the car toward the shoulder.
- Pull as far off the asphalt as possible, ensuring you park on firm, level ground.
If you experience a blowout on a divided highway, refrain from stopping in the open median zone situated between opposing lanes of high-speed traffic.
- Once the vehicle is fully immobilized, turn your hazard lights ON, pull up the electronic parking brake securely, and shift the gear selector into P (Park).
- Instruct all passengers to exit the vehicle promptly, ensuring they step out exclusively on the side facing away from passing traffic.
- When you are ready to replace the damaged wheel, follow the comprehensive tire-changing procedures detailed later in this section.
When your Kia Sorento fails to crank because of a depleted or low-capacity battery, you may need to perform an emergency jump start to restore electrical power.
