Kia Sorento: Highway Driving Assist Malfunction and Operational Limitations
|
(A) Check Driver Assistance system message |
If the Highway Driving Assist (HDA) system in your Kia Sorento detects a fault or experiences a system error, the
master warning light (
) will illuminate on the instrument cluster. This is accompanied
by
an informative warning message that remains visible for several seconds to alert the driver. Should this
notification
occur, we recommend having the Highway Driving Assist system inspected by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as
possible
to ensure proper functionality.
WARNING
As the operator of the Kia Sorento, you retain full responsibility for maintaining vehicle control and ensuring safe driving practices at all times.
You must maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel while the vehicle is in motion, even when the system is active.
Highway Driving Assist is designed strictly as a supplemental convenience feature to support the driver; it is not a substitute for human attention or a fully autonomous driving system. You must remain vigilant of road conditions and be prepared to take immediate manual action to guarantee safety.
Always keep your focus directed on the road ahead. You are solely responsible for compliance with all local traffic regulations. Kia disclaims all responsibility for traffic violations or accidents arising from driver negligence.
Highway Driving Assist may not identify every complex traffic scenario. Due to inherent system limitations, it might fail to detect potential collision hazards, such as motorcycles, cyclists, pedestrians, stationary obstacles, or infrastructure components like tollgates and guardrails. Always remain aware of these operational constraints.
The system will automatically disengage in specific scenarios:
When transitioning to roads unsupported by the system, including intersections, sharp junctions, or rest areas.
If the integrated navigation system experiences a service disruption, such as during a software update or a system restart cycle.
System performance may fluctuate or the feature may inadvertently disable itself based on real-time road conditions, navigation data, and external environmental factors.
The Lane Following Assist component may temporarily suspend operation if the front-facing camera loses sight of lane markings or if a hands-off warning is issued to the driver.
In high-noise environments, the auditory alerts generated by Highway Driving Assist may be difficult to hear; monitor the instrument cluster visually as well.
Attempting to navigate sharp curves at excessive speeds may cause the Kia Sorento to deviate from its intended path or wander out of the driving lane.
For your safety, please manually deactivate Highway Driving Assist whenever you are towing a trailer or another vehicle.
The sensitivity of the hands-off warning may vary based on your steering style and road conditions. Consistently keep your hands on the wheel to avoid unnecessary alerts.
We strongly advise that you thoroughly review the owner’s manual before attempting to utilize the Highway Driving Assist feature.
The system remains inactive during the vehicle start-up sequence or while the navigation and detection sensors are initializing.
TIP
You can verify detailed system status information through the service message section within the utility view of your Kia Sorento instrument cluster display.
Highway Driving Assist and the associated Highway Lane Change Assist may demonstrate abnormal behavior or unexpected deactivation under the following conditions:
The navigation system map database is outdated and no longer aligns with current road layouts.
Real-time GPS inaccuracies or map data discrepancies lead to a mismatch between the system’s digital map and the physical road.
The infotainment system processor is over-burdened by running multiple high-demand tasks simultaneously, such as voice recognition, video playback, and active route calculation.
GPS signal reception is obstructed, such as when driving through deep tunnels or dense urban canyons.
The driver manually departs from the planned route, alters the destination, or cancels active route guidance.
The vehicle enters a designated rest stop or service area.
Active projection services like Android Auto™ or Apple CarPlay® are currently in use.
The navigation system struggles to pinpoint the precise vehicle location, which can occur on complex multi-level interchanges, overpasses, or parallel frontage roads.
The system fails to reliably identify road boundaries or single white dashed lane markings.
Traffic lanes are under temporary construction or have restricted usage.
The road lacks clear physical separation, such as a center median or guardrail.
The intended target lane is designated as a variable lane or a dedicated bus lane.
External equipment, such as a carrier or trailer, is attached to the vehicle, affecting sensor perception.
NOTE
For comprehensive technical information regarding the front camera, radar arrays, and corner sensors, please refer to the "Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) (Sensor Fusion)" section of this manual.
