Kia Sorento: Engine coolant. Checking the coolant levelYour Kia Sorento is equipped with a high-pressure cooling system that utilizes a reservoir pre-filled at the factory with year-round antifreeze coolant. This system is designed to maintain consistent thermal management under diverse operating conditions.
Inspect the antifreeze protection levels and the coolant volume at least once annually, ideally at the start of the winter season, and verify levels before embarking on trips to colder climates.
NOTEIf your engine overheats due to low coolant, do not add fluid instantly while the system is under extreme thermal stress, as this could cause cracks in the engine block or cylinder head. Add coolant slowly and in small, controlled quantities once the system has cooled.
Never operate your Kia Sorento without sufficient engine coolant, as this can result in immediate water pump failure, severe engine seizure, and costly mechanical damage.
CAUTION
Removing the engine coolant reservoir cap
![]()
Never attempt to remove the engine coolant reservoir cap while the engine is operating or still hot. Doing so can severely damage the cooling system architecture and internal engine components. Furthermore, pressurized hot coolant or scalding steam could cause severe personal injury.
Always turn OFF the engine and wait until it cools down completely. Use extreme care when removing the engine coolant reservoir cap by wrapping a thick towel securely around it and turning it counterclockwise slowly to the first stop. Step back to let any residual pressure vent safely from the cooling system.
When you are completely sure that all built-up pressure has escaped, press down firmly on the cap using a thick towel and continue turning it counterclockwise to remove it.
Even if the engine is currently turned off, never remove the engine coolant reservoir cap or the radiator drain plug while the engine and radiator remain hot. Superheated coolant and high-pressure steam can still eject violently, leading to severe injury.
CAUTION
Please note that the electric cooling motor may continue to operate intermittently until you disconnect the negative battery cable.
Regularly check the overall condition and secure connections of all cooling system hoses and cabin heater hoses across your Kia Sorento. Promptly replace any hoses that exhibit signs of swelling, cracking, or material deterioration to prevent sudden fluid leaks.
The coolant level should sit precisely between the MAX and MIN (or F and L) reference marks molded onto the side of the expansion reservoir when the Kia Sorento engine is completely cold.
If you notice the coolant level is running low, replenish it using only distilled, deionized, or soft water mixed appropriately to bring the fluid level back up to the MAX (F) line. Take care not to overfill the reservoir beyond capacity.
If your Kia Sorento requires unusually frequent coolant top-offs, have the entire cooling system thoroughly pressure-tested and inspected by an authorized Kia service dealer.
NOTE
Make sure to securely and properly close the coolant expansion cap after refilling. Failing to seal it correctly could cause the Kia Sorento engine to overheat while driving.

When topping up the fluid, always use deionized water or soft water specifically suited for your Kia Sorento. Never mix hard tap water into the factory-filled solution, as mineral contaminants can trigger severe chemical malfunctions or internal engine corrosion.
The advanced powertrain in your vehicle features sensitive aluminum components that require robust protection from an ethylene-glycol and phosphate-based coolant blend to prevent freezing and electrochemical degradation.
Never use alcohol- or methanol-based coolants, nor mix them into the specified factory formulation designed for the Kia Sorento.
Avoid using a mixture concentration containing more than 60% antifreeze or less than 35% antifreeze, as improper ratios significantly reduce thermal protection and freeze-prevention effectiveness.
For exact preparation and volume mixture percentages, refer to the following specification table:
