Kia Sorento (MQ4, 2021-2026) Owner's Manual / Driving your vehicle / Dual clutch transmission (DCT) (Shift Lever): (if equipped) / Dual clutch transmission operation. DCT warning messages

The advanced dual clutch transmission equipped in your Kia Sorento features 8 forward speeds combined with 1 reverse gear, engineered to deliver both sporty responsiveness and high efficiency.

When the gear selector is placed in the standard D (Drive) position, all individual forward speeds are selected automatically by the transmission control module based on current vehicle speed and load.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of serious injury or death:

Driving a vehicle equipped with this dual clutch transmission offers a unique mechanical feel that bridges the engaging responsiveness of a manual gearbox with the effortless convenience of a fully automatic transmission. Unlike a traditional torque-converter automatic, you may notice distinct physical sensations and mechanical sounds as the dual clutches engage and shift gears.

TIP

If a severe internal transmission fault occurs, the gear position indicators (such as D or R) on the instrument cluster will start flashing, and your Kia Sorento may fail to move. If you encounter this warning behavior, have the powertrain inspected immediately by an authorized Kia dealer.

DCT warning messages

The following warning message displays when you drive slowly on a steep grade and the Kia Sorento detects that you have not engaged the brake pedal:

Instrument cluster warning message advising the driver to press the brake pedal on a steep grade in the Kia Sorento

(A) Steep grade! Press brake pedal

Steep grade

When driving up hills or on steep grades:

Transmission high temperature

Instrument cluster warning message indicating high transmission temperature requiring a safe stop in the Kia Sorento

(A) Transmission temp. is high! Stop safely.

Transmission overheated

Instrument cluster alert warning that the Kia Sorento transmission is hot and instructing to park with the engine running

(A) Transmission Hot! Park with engine on

Instrument cluster countdown timer showing transmission cooling duration required for the Kia Sorento

(A) Transmission cooling. Park for 00 min.

Instrument cluster notification indicating the Kia Sorento transmission has cooled and driving can resume

(A) Trans cooled. Resume driving.

If any of the warning messages on the instrument cluster continue to blink, have the system inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

Transmission ranges

The indicator on the instrument cluster displays the gear shift lever position when the ENGINE START/STOP button is in the ON position.

P (Park)

Always come to a complete stop before shifting the gear to P (Park).

To shift the gear from P (Park), engage the brake pedal firmly and make sure your foot is off the accelerator pedal.

The gear shift lever must be in P (Park) before you turn the engine OFF.

WARNING

R (Reverse)

Shift the gear to R (Reverse) to drive your Kia Sorento backward.

TIP

Always come to a complete stop before shifting the gear to or from R (Reverse). Shifting the gear to R (Reverse) while your vehicle is in motion may damage the transmission.

N (Neutral)

In N (Neutral), the wheels and transmission are not engaged.

WARNING

Do not shift the gear unless your foot is firmly on the brake pedal. Shifting the gear when the engine is running at a high speed can cause your Kia Sorento to move very rapidly. You could lose control of the vehicle and hit people or objects.

WARNING

Do not drive with the gear shift lever in N (Neutral). The engine brake does not work in N (Neutral), which may lead to an accident.

TIP

D (Drive)

D (Drive) gear is the normal forward driving gear shift position in your Kia Sorento. The transmission automatically shifts through an 8-gear sequence to provide the best fuel economy and power.

For extra power when passing another vehicle or climbing uphill, engage the accelerator fully. The transmission automatically shifts down to the next lowest gear.

To stop the vehicle while driving, engage the brake pedal fully to prevent unintended movement.

Manual mode

Whether your Kia Sorento is stationary or in motion, you can select Manual mode by pushing the gear shift lever from D (Drive) into the manual gate. To return to D (Drive) range operation, push the gear shift lever back into the main gate.

In manual mode, moving the gear shift lever back and forth allows you to shift gears rapidly. Unlike a manual transmission, manual mode allows you to shift gears while engaging the accelerator pedal.
