Kia Sorento (MQ4, 2021-2026) Owner's Manual / Driving your vehicle / Trailer towing: (if equipped) / Driving with a trailer

Towing a trailer demands a high level of concentration and practical experience. Before embarking on a journey onto the open road with your Kia Sorento, take the time to thoroughly acquaint yourself with how your vehicle responds under load. Understand that the combined length and weight of your setup significantly alter braking distances and steering responsiveness compared to driving unattached.

Before setting off, perform a comprehensive inspection of the trailer hitch platform, safety chains, electrical harness plug, lighting fixtures, tire pressures, and mirror adjustments. If your trailer is equipped with electric brakes, pull forward slowly and manually activate the trailer brake controller to verify proper operation and confirm that your electrical connection is communicating correctly.

Following distance

Always maintain a following distance at least twice as large when towing a trailer with your Kia Sorento compared to normal driving conditions. This extra buffer gives you the necessary reaction time to prevent emergency situations that demand aggressive braking or abrupt steering adjustments.

Passing

Executing passing maneuvers requires significantly more clear road ahead when you are hauling a trailer. Due to the extended overall length of your Kia Sorento and the attached load, you must drive considerably farther past the overtaken vehicle before it is safe to signal and return to your original lane.

Backing up

To master reversing with a trailer, place one hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Moving your hand to the left will direct the trailer to the left, while moving it to the right will steer the trailer to the right. Always back up at a slow, controlled pace and, whenever possible, enlist a spotter to guide your movements.

Making turns

When navigating corners while towing with your Kia Sorento, swing wider than you normally would. This deliberate technique prevents your trailer wheels from clipping curbs, soft road shoulders, street signs, or adjacent obstacles. Avoid jerky or sudden steering inputs, and activate your turn signals well in advance.

Turn signals when towing a trailer

A towed trailer must be equipped with its own dedicated turn signal flasher and integrated wiring. Inside your Kia Sorento, the green indicator arrows on the instrument cluster will flash whenever you signal a turn, confirming your input. However, keep in mind that these dashboard arrows can flash even if a bulb on the trailer has burned out, meaning you might assume drivers behind you see your signals when they do not. Make it a habit to periodically inspect the trailer lights, and always check them every time you disconnect and reconnect the wiring plug.

Never attempt to splice a trailer's lighting system directly into your vehicle's factory wiring harness. Always rely exclusively on an approved, vehicle-specific trailer wiring harness.

Consult an authorized Kia dealer for professional assistance with installing the official wiring harness.

Visit an authorized Kia dealer to acquire certified towing accessories.

WARNING

Failure to utilize an approved trailer wiring harness can lead to severe electrical system damage in your Kia Sorento or cause personal injury due to lighting malfunctions.

Detection of trailer light connection

Your Kia Sorento can automatically detect when a trailer light assembly is connected only when you utilize genuine accessories, such as the official tow bar and dedicated wiring harness, which interface directly with the vehicle's onboard computer systems. Upon plugging in the trailer socket, depressing the brake pedal or activating a turn signal allows the electronic control module to sense the electrical draw from the trailer lighting and update the vehicle's operational profile. When you disconnect the trailer, depressing the brake pedal or activating a turn signal again signals the control unit that power consumption has ceased, allowing automated assistance systems that were temporarily disabled to reactivate.

It remains your absolute responsibility as the driver to verify that all electrical links are secure and all trailer lights function perfectly before and during every trip by performing thorough manual checks.

CAUTION

Use exclusively genuine electrical connections and approved harnesses. Do not attempt to arbitrarily splice or wire trailer lights using makeshift methods, as doing so can trigger electrical faults and damage your Kia Sorento electronic architecture.

Driving on grades

Before descending a long or steep downhill grade while towing with your Kia Sorento, reduce your speed and manually downshift to a lower gear. Relying entirely on foot braking on long descents can cause extreme heat buildup, leading to brake fade and reduced stopping efficiency.

When tackling a prolonged uphill grade, select a lower gear and moderate your speed to approximately 45 mph (70 km/h) to minimize thermal stress and prevent engine or transmission overheating.

CAUTION

Parking on hills

Parking a vehicle and trailer combination on an incline introduces inherent rollaway risks that can result in property damage, severe injury, or fatal accidents.

WARNING

Parking on a hill

Leaving your Kia Sorento and attached trailer parked on a slope without taking precise safety precautions can cause the entire rig to break loose, leading to catastrophic accidents and severe injuries.

If parking on an incline is unavoidable, execute the following procedure precisely:

  1. Pull completely into the parking space and turn your steering wheel sharply toward the curb (turn right if facing downhill, left if facing uphill).

  2. Firmly engage the parking brake and turn OFF the ignition.

  3. Place sturdy wheel chocks securely against the downhill side of the trailer tires.

  4. Restart your engine, press the foot brake, shift the transmission into N (Neutral), disengage the parking brake, and gently ease off the foot brake until the trailer chocks fully absorb the gravitational load.

  5. Step firmly back on the foot brake and reapply the parking brake securely.

  6. Turn OFF the vehicle ignition, release the foot brake, and ensure the vehicle rests entirely on the engaged parking brake and chocks.

WARNING

Parking brake

Stepping away from your Kia Sorento while the parking brake is unengaged or loosely set is extremely dangerous. If the engine is left running, sudden vehicle movement can occur, placing you and bystanders at risk of fatal injury.

When you are ready to depart after parking on an incline:

  1. Depress and hold the foot brake pedal down while you perform the following steps:

    • Start your engine;

    • Shift into the appropriate drive gear; and

    • Release the parking brake.

  2. Gradually lift your foot off the brake pedal.

  3. Drive forward slowly until the trailer clears the wheel chocks.

  4. Bring the vehicle to a safe stop so a passenger can retrieve and store the chocks.
