Kia Sorento (MQ4, 2021-2026) Owner's Manual / Opening and Closing / Door Locks and Security Systems in the Kia Sorento / Child-Protector Rear Door Lock — Manual System (If Equipped)

The manual child-protector rear door lock system prevents children seated in the second row from inadvertently opening the rear side doors from inside the Kia Sorento.

Kia Sorento manual child safety lock mechanism location on rear door edge

Engaging these mechanical safety locks is strongly recommended whenever young children are riding in the rear seats of your Kia Sorento.

The manual child safety lock switches are located directly on the inner shut-face edge of each rear door. When set to the locked position (1), the inner door handle is completely disconnected from the latch mechanism, rendering it incapable of opening the door from inside.

To activate this child lock, insert your mechanical key blade or a flat-head screwdriver into the key slot on the door frame edge and rotate it clockwise to the locked position.

To restore normal interior door handle functionality for adult passengers, simply turn the key slot back to the unlocked setting.

Note that activating the child-protector lock affects only the interior door handle; the exterior door handle continues to operate normally, allowing parents to open the rear doors from outside.

WARNING: Rear Door Safety Practices

If a child accidentally opens a rear door while your Kia Sorento is traveling at speed, they face extreme danger of falling out, resulting in critical injury or fatal accidents. Always engage the rear child safety locks whenever transporting children in the vehicle.

WARNING: Passenger Responsibilities When Exiting

  • Driver assistance and vehicle exit safety monitoring systems cannot detect every potential obstacle, fast-moving vehicle, or approaching hazard near your doors.

  • The driver and passengers remain fully responsible for carefully checking outside surroundings before unlatching or swinging open any door. Always look back and check blind spots before stepping out of the vehicle.
