Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS)

The sophisticated Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system in your Kia Sorento utilizes an electronically controlled electric motor to provide smooth, responsive steering assistance precisely when you need it.

If the engine is switched off or if the power steering electronic assistance system becomes temporarily inoperable, you retain full mechanical control to steer the vehicle, though it will require significantly increased physical steering effort.

The advanced power steering control unit continuously monitors real-time steering wheel torque inputs and vehicle speed data to calculate and command the precise amount of electric motor assistance.

To optimize directional stability and driver feedback behind the wheel of your Kia Sorento, steering effort automatically becomes firmer and heavier as vehicle speed increases, while dynamically lightening up at lower speeds for effortless parking maneuvers.

Should you notice any unusual or sudden change in the physical effort required to steer your Kia Sorento during normal daily operation, have the system inspected promptly by an authorized Kia dealership.

NOTE

The following behavioral characteristics are completely normal during standard vehicle operation:

• When the ENGINE START/STOP button is placed in the ON position, the steering wheel transitions into active operation mode immediately after completing the internal MDPS diagnostic check, which takes approximately 3 seconds.

• You may hear a distinct electrical click noise originating from the MDPS relay right after turning the ENGINE START/STOP button to either the ON or OFF position.

• Operating the steering wheel while your Kia Sorento is completely stationary or crawling at very low speeds may occasionally produce minor mechanical operating sounds.

• If the MDPS system encounters an anomaly, an alert warning light will illuminate or flash on the instrument cluster. If power steering assistance cuts out entirely, you will need to apply significantly more physical force to steer the vehicle safely.

• Operating the steering wheel in extremely cold ambient temperatures may temporarily require heavier effort and generate slight operational noise. Once cabin and component temperatures rise, steering operation returns completely to normal.

• When the charging system warning light illuminates due to low system voltage—such as a malfunctioning alternator or a depleted battery—you may experience heavier steering effort as the system protects electrical resources.

• Immediately after jump-starting your Kia Sorento following a dead battery, the steering wheel may not function with power assistance initially. This is a temporary condition caused by low residual voltage; once the battery charges stably, power steering functionality will restore automatically. Gently rotate the steering wheel back and forth to confirm normal operation before driving off.

TIP

If you continuously rotate the steering wheel back and forth rapidly, the built-in overcurrent protection circuit will engage to prevent overheating, temporarily requiring heavier physical effort. This safety safeguard is completely normal and does not indicate a system malfunction; normal power assistance will resume automatically after a brief cooling period.

WARNING

If the electric power steering system fails or encounters a critical error, a warning light will turn on or blink on the instrument panel, and steering will demand significantly heavier physical effort. Firmly grip the steering wheel with both hands, apply increased muscular force to maintain control, safely pull your Kia Sorento over to the side of the road, and have the system inspected immediately by an authorized Kia dealer.

Never attempt to adjust the angle or telescopic height of the steering wheel while the vehicle is in motion. Doing so can cause you to lose directional control and result in a severe accident.

Adjusting steering wheel angle and height

1. To change the steering wheel angle and reach, firmly pull downward on the mechanical lock release lever located beneath the column.

2. Adjust the steering wheel to your preferred angle and slide it forward or backward to the ideal distance.

   Position the wheel so that it points toward your chest rather than directly at your face, ensuring you have an uninhibited view of all cluster gauges and warning indicators. Once comfortable, push the locking lever securely back up.

3. Push and pull the steering wheel firmly up and down to verify that the locking mechanism has fully engaged and secured the column in place.

4. Always complete all steering wheel adjustments before driving your Kia Sorento.

NOTE

On rare occasions following an adjustment, the lock-release lever may not immediately latch the steering column into place. If this occurs, simply readjust the wheel slightly to allow the internal mechanical gear teeth to align properly. This is entirely normal behavior resulting from gear tooth engagement and does not signify a mechanical defect.
