Securing a child restraint seat with “Tether Anchor” system

First, mount and secure the Child Restraint System firmly using either the lower LATCH anchors or the vehicle seat belt. If the child seat manufacturer specifies the use of a top tether, connect and pull the tether strap tight against the dedicated top tether anchor point.

Top tether anchors are located directly on the backside of the rear seatbacks in your Kia Sorento.

WARNING

Observe the following safety precautions when installing and tightening a top tether strap:

• Thoroughly read, understand, and comply with all specific installation steps supplied in your child seat manual.

• NEVER attach more than one top tether hook to a single tether anchor bracket. Sharing an anchor bracket can cause the mounting bolt to strain and fail in a crash.

• Do not clip the tether hook to cargo tie-down loops, luggage hooks, or any component other than the designated top tether anchor bracket. Non-approved mounting points will not hold restraint loads during an impact.

• Never use top tether anchor brackets to secure adult seat belts, occupant harnesses, or heavy cargo luggage in the rear cargo area.

• Always route and buckle unused rear seat belts behind the installed child seat to prevent loose straps from becoming a dangerous entanglement or strangulation risk to children.

To install and attach the top tether strap:

1. Route the top tether strap cleanly over the rear seatback.

   For seating positions fitted with adjustable head restraints, raise the head restraint and route the tether strap underneath the cushion, centered directly between the two metal headrest support posts. If the head restraint is non-adjustable or fixed, route the tether strap directly over the top center of the seatback frame.

2. Clip the tether hook securely onto the designated metal tether anchor bracket, then tension the strap following the child seat manufacturer’s manual until all slack is fully eliminated and the child seat is pulled snug against the seatback.
3. Verify that the child seat is rigidly locked in place by grasping the seat near the anchor path and attempting to push and pull it forward and side-to-side.

Securing a CRS with a lap/shoulder belt

When not securing a child seat via the LATCH anchors, all Child Restraint Systems must be anchored to a rear passenger seating position in your Kia Sorento using the lap belt portion of a standard 3-point lap/shoulder seat belt assembly.

Automatic locking mode

Under standard driving conditions, passenger seat belts in your Kia Sorento extend and retract freely to allow occupant movement, locking only during rapid deceleration or severe collisions (emergency locking mode). To firmly secure a Child Restraint System, you must manually convert the retractor mechanism to automatic locking mode by pulling the shoulder belt webbing all the way out to its maximum extension limit.

Engaging automatic locking mode prevents normal vehicle motion or child movement from loosening the seat belt over time, ensuring the Child Restraint System remains firmly anchored to the seat cushion throughout your journey.

To properly install a Child Restraint System on the rear passenger seats using the vehicle seat belts, follow these step-by-step procedures:

1. Place the Child Restraint System flush against a rear seat cushion and route the vehicle lap/shoulder belt webbing through or around the designated belt path according to the child seat manufacturer’s instructions.

   Ensure that the seat belt webbing is completely smooth and not twisted or kinked at any point along the belt path.

2. Insert the metal seat belt latch plate firmly into the matching seat buckle receptacle until you hear and feel a distinct, crisp click.

   Orient the seat buckle so that the red press-release button remains easily accessible for fast extraction during an emergency situation.

3. Grasp the diagonal shoulder strap and pull it all the way out until the retractor stops extending. Fully extending the belt webbing switches the internal retractor mechanism from emergency locking mode into automatic locking mode (child restraint mode).
4. Slowly guide the shoulder webbing back into the retractor reel while listening closely for a continuous clicking or ratcheting sound. This distinct audible feedback confirms that the retractor is locked in automatic locking mode. If you do not hear a clicking noise as the belt retracts, repeat steps 3 and 4 to ensure the mode is fully engaged.
5. Remove all remaining slack from the seat belt system by applying firm downward body weight onto the Child Restraint System while continuously feeding the excess shoulder webbing back into the retractor reel.
6. Grasp the child seat near the belt path and attempt to push and pull it forward and side-to-side to confirm it is held rigidly in place. If the seat moves excessively, unbuckle the seat belt and repeat steps 2 through 6.
7. Double check that the retractor remains locked in automatic locking mode by trying to pull webbing out of the retractor housing. If the belt is locked and cannot be pulled outward, automatic locking mode is actively working.

   If your child seat manufacturer requires or recommends using a top tether strap in combination with the lap/shoulder belt, refer to the detailed instructions in the Securing a child restraint seat with “Tether Anchor” system section.

   TIP

   When the seat belt is unbuckled and allowed to retract completely back into its original stowed position against the pillar, the retractor automatically resets from automatic locking mode back to standard emergency locking mode for normal adult passenger use.

   DANGER

   Auto lock mode

   Always verify that the seat belt retractor is converted to automatic locking mode whenever installing a Child Restraint System in your Kia Sorento. If the retractor remains in normal emergency locking mode, the child seat will shift freely during sharp turns, hard stops, or swerving maneuvers, exposing child occupants to serious injury or fatal crash risks.

   To uninstall and remove the Child Restraint System, press the red release button on the buckle, pull the lap/shoulder belt out from the child seat belt path, and allow the webbing to retract fully into the vehicle wall.
