Windshield wipers

With the ENGINE START/STOP button switched ON, you can operate the windshield wipers on your Kia Sorento using the following settings:

NOTE

If a heavy layer of snow or ice has accumulated across the windshield, do not drive off immediately. Defrost the glass for about 10 minutes or manually clear away the frozen buildup before using the windshield wipers to guarantee proper mechanical operation. Forcing the wipers against frozen snow and ice can easily strain and damage the wiper motor and linkage system.

TIP

Operating the wipers during heavy winter storms on snowy roads can sometimes cause the blades to temporarily pause due to dense snow packing against the windshield glass. This protective pause is a normal safety feature designed to prevent electrical overloading of the wiper motor and mechanical component failure. Should this occur, safely pull over and clear the packed snow from the base and top of the windshield before resuming your journey.

WARNING

Never spray the window washer fluid in freezing temperatures before first warming up the windshield using the vehicle defroster. The cold fluid can freeze instantly upon contact with the glass, completely obscuring your forward view and creating a dangerous driving hazard.

AUTO control : (if equipped)

Kia Sorento rain sensor and wiper control stalk setup mounted on the steering column

The rain sensor, strategically mounted on the upper end of the windshield in your Kia Sorento, continuously evaluates precipitation levels to dynamically modulate the wiper frequency for optimal visibility. As rainfall intensifies, the wiping cadence accelerates automatically, scaling back down and eventually pausing altogether as soon as the weather clears up completely.

To manually adjust the sensitivity or operational speed of the automatic system, simply rotate the dedicated speed control knob marked as (1) on the stalk.

When you transition the wiper switch into the AUTO position while the ENGINE START/STOP button is engaged in the ON state, the Kia Sorento executes a single diagnostic wipe cycle to confirm system responsiveness. Always remember to return the switch to the OFF position whenever automatic wiping is no longer required.

WARNING

When the ENGINE START/STOP button is ON and the windshield wiper switch is set to AUTO, follow these precautions to avoid any injury to your hands or other body parts:

  • Do not touch the upper end of the windshield glass facing the rain sensor.

  • Do not wipe the upper end of the windshield glass with a damp or wet cloth.

  • Do not put pressure on the windshield glass.

NOTE

  • When washing your Kia Sorento at an automated facility, make sure to set the wiper switch to OFF to prevent unintended automatic activation. Leaving it in AUTO risks triggering the blades mid-wash, which can cause mechanical damage.

The wiper may operate and be damaged if you set it to AUTO while washing the vehicle.

  • Do not tamper with or remove the integrated sensor cover situated at the upper passenger side of the windshield. Doing so risks compromising sensitive optical components in a manner not covered by your vehicle warranty.

  • When starting the vehicle in winter, set the wiper switch OFF. Otherwise, the wipers may operate, and ice may damage the windshield wiper blades. Always remove all snow and ice and defrost the windshield properly before operating the windshield wipers.

  • If you choose to apply aftermarket tinting to the front windshield of your Kia Sorento, exercise extreme caution to prevent any liquid solutions from seeping into the top-center sensor housing, as moisture infiltration can permanently ruin internal electronics.

Windshield washer operation

  1. Turn the wiper speed control switch to OFF.
  2. Gently pull the lever toward you to spray washer fluid on the windshield and run the wipers 1–3 cycles when the windshield is dirty. The spray and wiper operation will continue until you release the lever.

If the windshield washer on your Kia Sorento fails to discharge fluid, inspect the fluid reservoir level immediately. If the container is running low, top it off using a high-grade, non-abrasive windshield washer fluid formulated to prevent smearing.

The reservoir filler neck is conveniently located toward the front of the engine compartment on the passenger side for quick accessibility during routine maintenance checks.

    NOTE

To prevent possible damage to the washer pump, do not operate the washer when the fluid reservoir is empty.

    WARNING

Do not use the washer in freezing temperatures before warming the windshield with the defroster, as the washer solution could freeze on the windshield and obscure your view.

    NOTE

    • To prevent possible damage to the wipers or windshield, do not operate the wipers when the windshield is dry.

    • To prevent damage to the wiper blades, do not use gasoline, kerosene, paint thinner, or other solvents on or near the wiper blades.

    • To prevent damage to the wiper arms and other components, do not attempt to move the wipers manually.

    • To prevent damage to the wipers and washer system, use washer fluid containing anit-freeze in the winter season or cold weather.
