Seat belt precautions

Take the following vital precautions when using seat belts to ensure the maximum safety of all occupants traveling in your Kia Sorento.

Infant or small child

All 50 states have strict child restraint laws governing motor vehicle travel, and you should thoroughly understand the specific legal requirements in your jurisdiction. Infants and young children must always be properly placed and securely installed in the rear seating rows of your Kia Sorento using an approved safety seat. Small children receive the best protection from potential crash injuries when properly secured in the rear seat using a certified Child Restraint System that fully satisfies Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). Before purchasing any child safety seat, verify that it carries a manufacturer label certifying compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 (FMVSS 213). Ensure the chosen restraint system matches your child’s current height and weight specifications as outlined on the product label. Always refer to the Child Restraint System (CRS) section for proper anchoring instructions in your Kia Sorento.

Larger children

Children who have outgrown a traditional Child Restraint System should always occupy the rear seat of your Kia Sorento and use the vehicle’s factory 3-point lap/shoulder belts. Position the lower lap belt portion as low as possible so that it fits snugly across the child’s pelvic hip bones rather than their abdomen. Periodically check the belt alignment during travel, as normal movement can cause the strap to shift out of position. Studies prove children are safest in a collision when correctly restrained in the rear seats. If an older child (over age 12) must sit in the front passenger seat, move the seat slide mechanism to its rearmost position away from the dashboard and secure them tightly with the lap/shoulder belt. Children under age 13 should always be restrained in the rear seats. NEVER place a child under 13 in the front passenger seat. NEVER place a rear-facing child seat in the front seat of a vehicle equipped with an active passenger airbag.

If the diagonal shoulder belt lightly touches or rubs against the child’s neck or face, try moving the child closer toward the center of the seat cushion. If the shoulder strap continues to contact their neck or face despite repositioning, the child is not yet ready for adult seat belts and must be returned to an appropriate booster seat or Child Restraint System.

Small children

Never permit small children to ride in your Kia Sorento without a properly fitted Child Restraint System. If the diagonal shoulder strap rests against your child’s neck, throat, or face, the child is too small to safely use the adult seat belt. In the event of a crash, an ill-fitting seat belt will exert severe impact forces directly onto your child’s delicate neck and facial structure, risking catastrophic injury.

Restraint of pregnant women

Pregnant women should wear the standard 3-point lap/shoulder seat belt assembly at all times when riding in a vehicle, following specific guidance from their medical doctor. The lower lap belt portion must be worn AS SECURELY AND LOW AS POSSIBLE across the hips and pelvic bone, positioned comfortably beneath the rounded abdomen.

Pregnant women

Pregnant women must never place the lap portion of the seat belt directly over or across the abdomen where the fetus is located. The extreme tightening force exerted by the seat belt during a collision can press heavily into the abdomen, severe enough to crush or injure the unborn child.

Injured person

A standard seat belt should always be utilized when transporting an injured person to reduce the risk of secondary injuries in transit. When transporting someone with pre-existing injuries or physical conditions, consult a medical professional or physician for specific positioning recommendations prior to travel in your Kia Sorento.

One person per belt

Two occupants (including small children) must never share or attempt to use a single seat belt simultaneously. Wrapping a single restraint belt around two people severely compromises strap tension and can dramatically increase the risk and severity of injuries during a sudden stop or traffic accident.

Do not lie down

To reduce the likelihood of bodily injury during a collision and maintain full effectiveness of your Kia Sorento security systems, all passengers must remain seated upright with seatbacks locked in an upright position while the vehicle is moving. A seat belt cannot provide proper restraint protection if an occupant lies flat across the rear bench or if the seatback is heavily reclined, as the body can slide underneath the belt webbing during an impact.

Care of seat belts

Seat belt assemblies and internal retractor hardware should never be disassembled, modified, or altered. Take constant care to ensure that seat belt webbing and metal latch buckles are not slammed in doors, pinched in folding seat hinges, or subjected to mechanical abuse.

Pinched seat belt

Always verify that the seat belt webbing and buckle latch are clear before returning folding rear seatbacks to their upright, locked positions in your Kia Sorento. If the belt webbing or buckle housing becomes caught or pinched in the folding seat latch mechanism, the fabric fibers can become damaged, potentially causing the restraint system to fail during a collision or emergency braking maneuver.

CAUTION

Seat belt buckles and metal latches can become extremely hot when the vehicle is parked in direct sunlight with the windows closed. Always inspect and handle metal buckles with care before securing infants or young children to prevent accidental skin burns.

Periodic inspection

All seat belt webbings, buckles, anchors, and retractors in your Kia Sorento should be inspected periodically for signs of fraying, wear, cuts, or mechanical damage. Any worn or damaged restraint components must be replaced immediately by an authorized service center.

Keep belts clean and dry

Seat belt webbing must be kept clean and dry to preserve its structural integrity. Clean contaminated webbing using a mild soap solution mixed with warm water. Never apply bleach, chemical dyes, harsh industrial detergents, or abrasive cleaners, as these substances can chemically degrade the synthetic fabric fibers and severely weaken the seat belt strength.
