Resetting the sunroof

Kia Sorento sunroof control module reset procedure step diagram using switch

Under specific operating conditions, the electronic control module for your Kia Sorento sunroof system may lose its baseline memory settings and require a manual reset. Reinitialization is typically necessary in the following circumstances:

Follow this exact step-by-step sequence to reset the system calibration:

  1. Park the vehicle safely on flat ground, shift the transmission into P (Park), and start the engine so that constant system voltage is maintained during the reset process.
  2. Ensure both the power sunshade fabric and the glass sunroof panel are brought to their fully closed positions. If either is open, push the switch forward continuously until every component stops moving.
  3. Release the sunroof switch once the glass and shade are fully closed.
  4. Push the switch forward again and hold it firmly until the power sunshade and glass panel execute a short tilt movement, then release the switch immediately.
  5. Within a few seconds, push and hold the sunroof switch forward continuously. Keep holding the switch while the sunshade and glass complete a full automatic cycle (sliding open completely and then returning to the fully closed position). Do not release the switch until the entire sequence comes to a complete halt.

If you accidentally release the control switch mid-cycle, the reset process will cancel, and you must restart the initialization sequence from step 2.

    NOTE

Failure to properly reinitialize the Kia Sorento sunroof control system following a power loss or battery disconnection may prevent automatic features from operating correctly or result in improper track positioning.

Sunroof open warning

Kia Sorento instrument cluster display showing visual sunroof open warning chime prompt

If the sunroof panel is left open or partially unlatched when the engine is turned off and the driver door is opened, your Kia Sorento will sound an audible warning chime for several seconds while flashing a visual warning message on the instrument cluster display panel.

Always verify that the sunroof glass and power sunshade are securely shut before exiting the vehicle to prevent cabin exposure.

NOTE

Leaving your Kia Sorento parked with the glass panel or sunshade open leaves your vehicle vulnerable to unauthorized entry or opportunistic theft. Unsealed roof panels also risk severe interior damage from unexpected rain, snow, or blowing debris.
