Kia Sorento: Opening the fuel filler door

1. Turn the engine OFF completely and ensure the vehicle is safely parked before attempting to refuel.
2. Make sure the driver's door is unlocked, as the fuel door locking mechanism operates in sync with the central locking system of your Kia Sorento.
3. Press the rear center edge of the fuel filler door inward to release the push-to-open latch mechanism.
4. Pull the fuel filler door outward to open it fully and gain access to the fuel cap assembly.
5. To remove the fuel tank cap (1), turn it counterclockwise slowly. You may hear a distinct hissing noise as residual pressure inside the tank safely equalizes with the ambient air.
6. Place the removed cap securely into the dedicated hanger bracket located on the inner side of the fuel filler door to keep it clean and prevent paint damage.

   TIP

   The fuel filler door automatically unlocks whenever the driver's door is unlocked.

   To unlock the fuel filler door on your Kia Sorento, perform any of the following actions:

   • Press the unlock button on your smart key fob.

   • Press the central door unlock button located on the armrest control panel of the driver's door.

   • Pull the driver's interior door handle outward.

   The fuel filler door locks automatically whenever all passenger doors are locked.

   To lock the fuel filler door:

   • Press the lock button on your smart key fob.

   • Press the central door lock button on the armrest trim of the driver's door.

   For added safety while driving, all passenger doors and the fuel filler door will automatically lock once the vehicle speed exceeds 9.3 mph (15 km/h).

   NOTE

   • Before refueling, always verify the correct fuel specification required for your specific vehicle configuration.

   • Introducing incorrect fuel, such as placing diesel or high-concentration ethanol into a gasoline engine (or vice versa), will damage the fuel pump, fuel injectors, and line components, leading to major mechanical damage.

   • If the fuel filler door fails to unlatch due to an electrical failure or central locking malfunction, contact an authorized Kia dealer for professional assistance.

   TIP

   If ice formation prevents the fuel filler door from opening during cold weather, tap gently around the door perimeter or push on it lightly to break the ice seal. Avoid using prying tools, screwdrivers, or rigid levers, as these will scratch the body paint and dent the metal panel. If necessary, apply an approved automotive deicer fluid around the edges (never use engine radiator antifreeze) or move the vehicle into a warm space to let the ice thaw naturally.
