Kia Sorento: Automatic transmission operationThe advanced automatic transmission in your Kia Sorento features 8 forward speeds matched with 1 reverse gear. The powertrain computer dynamically selects optimal gear ratios in real-time, striking a seamless balance between responsive acceleration and excellent fuel economy.
TIP
The initial gear shifts on a brand-new vehicle or after a 12V battery disconnection might feel slightly firm or unusual. This is completely normal behavior; the shifting smoothness will calibrate automatically once the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) complete several normal driving cycles.
For smooth and mechanical wear-free operation, always hold your foot down on the service brake pedal when moving the selector out of N (Neutral) into any forward or reverse drive gear.
CAUTION
Automatic transmission
Always perform a careful visual check around the exterior of your Kia Sorento for pedestrians or playing children before shifting into D (Drive) or R (Reverse).
Before stepping out of the driver's seat, confirm that the transmission is securely locked in P (Park), the parking brake is firmly applied, and the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position. Leaving these precautions out can cause your Kia Sorento to roll away unexpectedly.
Avoid downshifting abruptly or relying heavily on engine braking when navigating slippery, icy, or wet roads in your Kia Sorento, as sudden traction loss can induce skidding.
NOTE
To protect internal transmission clutches from premature wear, never apply accelerator input while holding the service brakes down in R (Reverse) or any drive gear.
Do not slam the gear selector into D (Drive) or R (Reverse) from P (Park) or N (Neutral) while the engine is revved above normal idle speed.
When waiting on a steep slope or hill, never use throttle modulation to keep your Kia Sorento stationary. Always apply the foot brake or pull the parking brake lever.
Never rely solely on the transmission's Park pawl to hold your Kia Sorento stationary on an incline; always set the parking brake firmly first.
