Kia Sorento: Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) engineered into your Kia Sorento is designed to help prevent the wheels from locking up during hard braking so that vehicle stability is preserved and you can maintain steering control.
The ABS (and Electronic Stability Control) cannot defy the laws of physics or prevent accidents caused by reckless driving maneuvers, excessive speed, or adverse environmental conditions. Even though emergency braking maximizes vehicle control, always maintain a safe stopping distance between your Kia Sorento and objects or vehicles ahead. Always reduce your driving speed during challenging or unusual road conditions, including but not limited to:
When driving on rough, gravel-strewn, or snow-covered winter roads
When driving with tire chains installed
When driving on roads where the surface is irregular, heavily pitted, or features uneven lane heights
Driving under these hazardous conditions inherently increases the required stopping distance for your vehicle.
The ABS continuously monitors individual wheel speeds via wheel sensors. If any wheel is detected to be on the verge of locking, the ABS rapidly modulates hydraulic brake pressure to that specific wheel.
When you engage the brake pedal firmly under slick conditions that would ordinarily lock the wheels, you may hear a rhythmic ticking sound from the engine bay or feel a pulsing vibration through the brake pedal. This feedback is completely normal and confirms that your ABS is actively working to keep you safe.
To obtain the maximum benefit from your ABS during an emergency stop, do not pump your brakes or modulate pressure manually. Push the brake pedal down as hard and steadily as possible to let the computer control braking force efficiently.
You may hear a brief mechanical click sound when your Kia Sorento begins to move forward after starting the engine. This is completely normal and indicates that the ABS self-diagnostic routine is functioning properly.
Even with advanced ABS assistance, your vehicle still requires sufficient physical stopping distance. Always maintain a safe buffer zone from traffic ahead.
Always slow down significantly before entering turns or curves. The ABS cannot prevent accidents resulting from excessive cornering speeds.
On loose gravel, deep snow, or unpaved road surfaces, operation of the ABS may actually result in a slightly longer stopping distance compared to vehicles without ABS.
The ABS warning light (
) stays illuminated for
approximately 3 seconds after you switch the ignition into the ON position.
The system performs an automatic self-diagnosis during this period, and the warning light turns OFF if all components are functioning normally. If the light remains lit, there may be a fault within the ABS. Contact an authorized Kia dealer for service.
When you drive on a road with extremely poor traction, such as sheet ice, and keep the brake pedal depressed continuously, the ABS may operate constantly, causing the warning light to illuminate. Safely pull over to a secure location and bring your vehicle to a complete stop.
Restart the engine. If the ABS warning light turns OFF, your braking system is operating normally. If it stays lit, a malfunction may be present. Schedule an inspection with an authorized Kia dealer.
When you jump-start your Kia Sorento because of a drained or dead battery, electrical systems may behave erratically, and the ABS warning light may illuminate temporarily. This occurs due to low system voltage and does not indicate a permanent hardware failure.
Do not pump your brake pedal unnecessarily.
Recharge or replace the battery fully before driving your vehicle on public roads.
