Kia Sorento: How to use the smart liftgate with auto open. How to deactivate the smart liftgate with auto open function using the smart key
The hands-free smart liftgate with AUTO open functionality on the Kia Sorento provides effortless access to the rear cargo compartment without requiring physical contact or foot-swiping gestures. The system triggers hands-free activation automatically when specific conditions are met:
A minimum of 15 seconds has passed after all passenger doors and the tailgate are securely closed and locked.
You stand continuously within the rear bumper detection zone carrying the registered smart key for more than 3 seconds.
NOTE
To prevent accidental deployment, the Kia Sorento smart liftgate with AUTO open remains inactive under the following operational scenarios:
The smart key is detected within the initial 15-second buffer period following door lock confirmation and stays continuously in range.
The smart key is sensed within 15 seconds after locking and remains within 60 inches (1.5 meters) of the front door handles on vehicles equipped with the exterior Welcome Light system.
Any passenger door or the tailgate panel itself remains unlatched or unlocked.
The system senses that the smart key is located inside the vehicle cabin or cargo area.
To enable or disable the touchless tailgate feature, navigate through the infotainment touchscreen menu on your Kia Sorento by selecting Setup > Vehicle > Door > Smart Liftgate.
|
When you stand within the designated rear detection zone—positioned approximately 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm) behind the Kia Sorento rear bumper—with the smart key in your possession, the vehicle initiates the approach sequence. The hazard warning lights flash and an audible chime alerts you that the key has been recognized prior to opening.
NOTE
If you do not intend to access the cargo hold, avoid remaining inside the detection range. If you accidentally step into range and the visual hazard lights and audible chimes trigger, immediately step away from the rear bumper. The Kia Sorento liftgate will abort the opening cycle and remain fully closed.
|
Once the detection phase completes, the hazard warning lights flash rapidly and the warning chime sounds 6 consecutive times, signaling that the Kia Sorento motorized liftgate is unlatching and raising to its preset height.
WARNING
Always double-check that the motorized liftgate is completely latched and closed before shifting into drive or operating the vehicle.
Verify that the area around the motorized hatch is clear of pedestrians, children, low overhead barriers, and structural obstacles before initiating activation.
Exercise caution when opening the hatch while parked on steep inclines, as unsecured items in the rear cargo area of your Kia Sorento may shift or spill out unexpectedly, risking injury or vehicle damage.
Deactivate the smart liftgate AUTO open function through the infotainment settings prior to entering an automatic car wash to prevent unintentional hatch deployment from water jets or brushes.
Store your smart key securely out of reach of children to prevent accidental opening or unintended tampering around the rear of the vehicle.
NOTE
Liftgate gas lifters
Driving your Kia Sorento with the rear hatch unlatched or partially open subjects the gas struts and mounting hardware to excessive stress, potentially causing severe structural damage or premature failure of the liftgate lifters.

If you press any remote key fob button during the initial Detect and Alert stage, the Kia Sorento hands-free auto-open sequence halts immediately and deactivates for that cycle.
Familiarize yourself with key fob deactivation controls so you can override automatic opening quickly during unexpected or emergency situations.
NOTE
Pressing the Door unlock button (2) temporarily cancels the active detection phase. However, if no vehicle doors are opened within 30 seconds, the Kia Sorento security system automatically relocks the vehicle and re-arms the smart liftgate system.
Holding the Liftgate release button (3) for longer than 1 second overrides the proximity sequence and initiates immediate powered opening of the hatch.
Pressing the Door lock button (1) or Liftgate release button (3) outside of the active Detect and Alert window will not alter or disarm the stand-by smart liftgate configuration.
If the auto-open sequence was canceled by pressing a key fob button and opening a side door, you can restore smart liftgate readiness simply by closing and locking all vehicle doors.
